Looking for a neurologist I'm in need of a neurologist. I'm new to the area and my first general practitioner appointment is in the middle of February and was hoping to...

Let me know what you find. I'm looking for a second opinion... I'm currently seeing Marina Zaretskaya who's staff seems fairly flexible and friendly, they may be able to get you in soon. As for "without a referral" they may even be able to tell you where to go to get on, however maybe your former PCP may be able to do that? As for insurance - below is a link of what she accepts - not sure if you are in any of those BCBS groups, but call to make sure - both BCBS and the doctor. http://doctor.webmd.com/doctor/marina-zaretskaya-md-d4 f70490-ac44-4084-ada1-455 b36 fbf451-insurance Good lucky buddy

I really like Dr. James Valeriano at AGH. He's the Chair of the Neurology Department there. You may have to see one of his PAs before you see him. He specializes in epilepsy. In my humble opinion, it's worth it to go through the process to see him. He's been my neurologist for eight years after my other specialist retired. If you have a question or concern, he (not an assistant) always makes time to call you back. Feel free to PM me any question or contact info you may need.
PsychaPsychologist replied:
Usually if you call or do an online chat thing with your insurance company, you give them your new zip code and they'll send you a list of all covered providers in a particular specialty. You'll still have to call around to see who is open to new patients and when, but at least you'll start from a narrowed down list. Also keep in mind that some major systems that have centralized booking (like UPMC and AHN in Pittsburgh) may not actually be able to book you in as soon as an individual office could, especially as a new patient. Meaning, if you are trying to schedule with someone try calling their office directly rather than going through centralized scheduling, if it's something pressing (which it sounds like it might be if you were in the ER!)
Excelius replied:
A family member has been hunting for a new neurologist as well, after their old office kept canceling and pushing back appointments. They found someone who can see them in February, and that was scheduled back in early December. If you found someone in mid-January who can see you by the end of February, you're already lucky. There is a [nationwlde shortage of neurologists](https://www.aan.com/PressRoom/home/PressRelease/1178), and Pittsburgh is not immune.

Ben Smolar at Premier Medical Associates. The man is one of the best doctors I've come across, though you're going to need a physician referral.

I don't think I'm a surgical...

Dr. Okonwko at UPMC Presby is considered one of the best in the city.

I would also vote for Dr. Okonwko. He did my mom's back surgery and then just two weeks ago he fixed her neck when she fell and broke it. She just got home today so he must have done a pretty good job. She went from having emergency surgery two Fridays ago to being in the ICU to being in rehab to being home in 2 weeks.
slayhern replied:
Okonwko and Moossy are both very talented surgeons. Okonwko is probably a bit more personable with patients than Moossy, but both are highly skilled.
Ms_C_McGee replied:
Dr. Okonwko is amazing, and a super nice guy. He did my spinal fusion 5 years ago and is the best in Pgh.
greybeh replied:
Thank you so much! I'll check into Dr. Okonwko!

Someone close to me was cared for by Dr. Nduka Amankulor at UPMC Shadyside for a herniated disc. While I'm not the patient in question, I found him to very knowledgeable and personable and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to others.
AxsDeny replied:
Dr. Patrick Smith or Dr. Pappas at Three Rivers Orthopedic. Dr. Smith did my cervical surgery (c3-c6 fusion). He's super friendly and takes the time to talk to patients without rushing the interaction.

Thank you so much! I have an appointment in mid-December with Dr. Okonwko. Your responses helped me to know I am going to get support and information! Thank you!

My dad has been going to Dr. Ben Smolar for almost 20 years now (Premier Medical Center - they take all kinds of insurance). I've also seen him a couple times myself - I love him! He has a great, dry sense of humor.

We've seen most of the Geisinger neuros at one point or another. Leah's neuro is awesome, but really only sees epilepsy patients at this point. The boys both see Dr. Maguire. He does outreach clinic at Grays Woods some Mondays and Wednesdays. He knows his stuff. His personality is a little rough. Dr. Speigle was on call the one week Leah was inpatient. He seemed really nice and knowledgable. I know he does outreach clinic in Dubois, but not sure where else if at all.
