Talk to your family doctor. They will refer you to a specialist. It will be 100% free of charge.

I go to Horizon Psychology and see Alexandra - she's really good and has a very calm voice. In the past I've gone to CFS, their services are less expensive but I had a hard time getting comfortable with the workers there. I finally got one really good one, which was an intern, but then her internship finished by the summer and she had to leave. Who's to say you wouldn't like the workers there, though. To each their own. STAY AWAY from Giti Caravan. I've never seen her but just go ahead and read her reviews. Seems like a nightmare. Other than that, just search therapists in Saskatoon on google and choose one based on their specialties. If you're looking for a psychiatrist for diagnosis and prescriptions, you need to go through your family doctor to be referred to one and you don't really get to choose. I hope you do that, as well, because a family doctor does not have the education to be diagnosing/prescribing psychiatric medication.

Have you considered trying meditation? I've battled anxiety for many years and after seeing 4 difference counselors I signed up for a 4 week meditation workshop. It's now been 8 weeks since I started integrating meditation into my daily routine and have experienced unbelievable results. Not saying it's a miracle cure but I can say wholeheartedly that meditation is a great way to curb the ills that anxiety creates.

If you contact Mental Health and Addictions Services you can get connected to a mental health counsellor (typically a social worker). Their counsellors can also help streamline getting connected to a psychologist. Their services are free though there is a bit of a wait time - not horrible though. You can do a phone intake at (306) 655- 7777 and then they'll book you in to see someone!

Whether this generation believes it or not, the yellow pages used to be useful for these things.
Elizabeth Tosney is a wonderful psychologist in Saskatoon; highly recommend her. Also, I agree with previous remarks regarding meditation. Google or youtube: Jon Kabbat-Zinn, he has some great books as well as audiobooks that were really helpful to me (one was regarding pain management, but the techniques were transferable to anxiety). I've also found vinyasa style yoga to be beneficial for my anxiety, as the focus on breathing and being physical takes me out of my head (at least during the class time!):) If you have any questions, get in touch. Good luck!

There are others too, but these were the most recent ones I found.

In the past I've used the services of low-cost/free counselling (like Canadian Mental Health and Catholic Family Services) and didn't really get the expertise I needed personally in the situations I was in. If your employer offers and assistance plans it is definitely worth looking for someone in the private sector, since I suspect they can afford to pay higher/competitive salaries to attract successful professionals. Of course, this is just my own personal take (and I wish I had felt this way sooner in life).

I would encourage you to look on the “psychology today” website as they vet all of the therapists and counsellors on there. Just filter it to Saskatoon. They will all be qualified and the website includes little blurbs about each therapist which states their areas of expertise and training. Most insurance plans offer some coverage for psychology /social work/counselling services. The Saskatoon Canadian Mental Health Association, Family Services Saskatoon, and Catholic Family Services all offer counselling at reduced rates and some free services too.
