I heard ValueCare Vet (1515 E. 66 th) is very reasonable, it was mentioned on this page not too long ago by Kelly Janohosky. One of my dogs is due for vaccinations and is impossible to get into the exam room, but we are going to give them try and see how we like it.
Molly I. replied:
We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Dr. Gatto at Best Friends (just behind Sonic Burger/Southtown). He's very pragmatic, really takes time with us to help us understand what's going on, etc. He's also way more affordable than any other vet we've been to (been to Diamond Lake - awful experience) and also not a great experience at Wood Lake clinic. WE just had to put our 18 year old cat down and they were very kind about the whole thing. We also have a dog and now have two kittens. The only downside is they don't do chickens...bummer for us! https://www.bestfriendsmn.com/

Our dog needed to have knee surgery . It was a PTLO and we went to Shamrock Animal Hospital in Rosemount. They had the best price for the surgery and were great We found this was the better of the two types they did at the time. Had less chance of reoccurrence. Our dog did great.

We just took a trek all the way over to Chaska to the Value Care Vet Clinic. They were the most affordable for a spay surgery in the metro. The clinic was clean and professional.

Are you talking about TTA surgery? If so I just had it done for my dog on the left rear leg. We go to Blue Cross on Lyndale. They had a surgeon come in and do the surgery at their clinic. It has been a few months and she is doing great. She hesitates going down the deck stairs but other than that she is fine. It was about $3000 but it worked out great for us. http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/ortho_TTA.htm

I have a foster dog who also needs CCL surgery. The first thing I did was spent about $175.00 to get a specialist opinion at the U of MN. (They accepted the xrays I already had taken). They provided a few more options. 3 k is high and I would definitely check elsewhere as I have been quoted by some highly recommended places anywhere from 1000-1500.00. The U did tell me there are multiple options out there but what you hear, get told are the options they work with, or handle specifically at that vets clinic.

It's funny because we've used 4 vet offices for different reasons. 1. VCA on 66 th is great for the simple stuff (vaccinations, etc). 2. Westgate on 40 th and France is the absolute best for big stuff (surgeries, severe illnesses, euthanization, etc). 3. Diamond Lake is good for getting in somewhere quick. 4. Banfield at PetSmart on Lyndale - just DON'T go there. Ever. At all. Edited to add that the Flying Cloud Emergency Pet Hospital is the absolute best for middle of the night emergencies!

We like Dr. Sarah Bourn at Woodlake. She doesn't push procedures and meds and doesn't constantly harp at you if your pet has a few extra pounds. She is a great Vet and we have taken all our animals to her for about 8 years.

I highly recommend Diamond Lake Animal Hospital who is my regular Veterinarian. My dog recently got sick and I took him to one of the local Richfield Vet clinics because it was a semi-emergency and my vet was booked, and all they did was sign me up for an expensive health plan, suggest it was my dog's teeth that were the problem, but couldn't get him in for a dental cleaning for 6 weeks. They gave me no treatment plan and just left me with a huge bill that ended up to be over $600. I went back to Diamond Lake Animal Hospital and they did an extensive exam, said there was nothing wrong with his teeth that required the dental cleaning, gave me a very clear treatment plan and charged me $50. I went back to the "other" vet, canceled the plan and will never go back there. PM me if you want to know what Vet to avoid.

Do not take your pets to Best Friends! Dr. Gatto delayed insulin treatment for our cat and he ended up dying. He also pushed expensive, unnecessary "medicated" food that we decided against giving our dog and he is doing great without it. If you want a quality vet, go to Lake Harriet vet. They offer holistic treatment as well and their vets actually know something about nutrition (a lot of vets don't - it's an elective in vet school). It's too hard to explain all the details in one post, but if you care about your animals, avoid Dr. Gatto!

All these good recommendations are another reminder for me of how strategically located Richfield is! We can get to Minneapolis, Edina, Bloomington, Mall of America, the airport, etc., all so easily, either by car or public transportation . . or in some cases, on foot, I am sometimes amazed over how many grocery options I have within about a mile and a half . . and likewise, good veterinarians, apparently! I will stick with Dr. Gatto at Best Friends as long as he is practicing. I hope he does not retire before the end of my (old) cats' lives because he has just been the best.
Jodi K. replied:
I agree! Diamond Lake is GOOD!
Laurie H. replied:
Went to Woodlake for years and they certainly are not what they used to be. Switched to Dr. Barb at Shady Oak (daughter highly recommended). I've found pricing to be considerably lower and Dr. Barb to be very meticulous and caring. Front desk people are sometimes not the friendliest but they don't take care of my dog. It's further away (169 & Mtka. Blvd.) but well worth it!
Anne S. replied:
Woodlake was fine for us for the most part, until we had to put one of our cats down, and they didn't sedate her or do anything to make her comfortable before administering the "final" shot. My husband felt her tremble and jolt as the chemicals hit her, and it almost destroyed him. That left a pretty bad taste in our mouths. Also, as a side note, we just felt that maybe they could have been a little cleaner. Not a game changer, but after the other "event", it kind of stuck out. As a follow up to this thread, our visit to Diamond Lake Animal Hospital went well today. Much cleaner seeming than Woodlake, friendly staff, and Dr. Peterson was very kind, helpful, and had a very gentle bedside manner, especially with our particularly skittish cat. He explained what he was seeing throughout the examination, and made us feel like he cared. Now we're just waiting on some blood work, fingers crossed it's no big deal!
