I used to work for these amazing people who help provide education and livelihood to people in Africa http://empoweringlives.org/

A tough subject... especially with this topic being brought up in the recent election (of which more than a few charities were more than a little self-serving or, otherwise, niche market). I think charities for education would be your cup of tea, so I'd recommend AVID (www.avid.org) or Communities in Schools (www.communitiesinschools.org).

Beacon House in San Pedro. A wonderful program for men who suffer from substance abuse. We support this program because the actually train the men and the serve our community. Many are trained in culinary arts and assist in community events, the use graduates to staff the program. It's worth your investigation.
Isancturary.org.. My grandma olsen.supported this charity and so do I!

I work at SeniorServ. We are a meals-on-wheels company for home-bound seniors and have lost a lot of funding because of the sequestration and government budget shortfalls. We can no longer provide holiday meals and have a waiting list of around 200 in most of Orange County. You can donate on our website SeniorServ.org

I used to support Salvation Army--they really do alot of good. However, since they support abortion in the case of rape or incest - I cannot recommend them wholeheartedly. I support pro life charitys - His Nesting Place in Long Beach is #1 on my list. They really need the funding and help women with crisis pregnancies with shelter, medical care and hope.

Vivian, I am so sorry that meals-on-wheels could not help you. Part of it is that we have limited funding and spaces, and we cannot help everyone that needs it. And part of it is that we have guidelines that we MUST follow. Believe me when I tell you that we do not make these decisions lightly and our hearts break daily for the people we have to turn away. As I said, we have 200 seniors on a waiting list as we have not started any new people since October because of funding shortfalls. Fortunately there are some alternatives such as companies that will ship out pre-made meals appropriate for seniors for a fee. There is also Vons.com where you can order groceries online and they will deliver for a fee.

A lesser known fund that is doing some important work in the northwest is named after my uncle. It helps low income folk transition into permanent housing and off assistance. Pays first and last month's rent. I believe it is just called the "Hunthausen Fund". Here is a link to learn more. http://www.stjames-cathedral.org/Contribute/hunthausenfund.htm

The county shelter is amazing, they have three locations. The closest one to OB is on Gaines Street, where you'll also find the Humane Society. Both organizations are amazing. I also volunteer with the Pit Bull Rescue San Diego, our dogs are pulled from shelters and placed into foster homes. Their info can be found at www.Pbrsd.org

Can anybody recommend a type of paint for body painting and where to get it locally? I want to paint myself silver or gold for a charity pub crawl tomorrow.

Doug Smith he was the first person I hit up, but haven't heard back from him!

Liquid latex is the best! Acrylic Body paint is good and inexpensive. You can get it at Walmart or at a Halloween shop. There should be some open already.
