I stopped by Chula Vista cycles. https://m.facebook.com/170692559613283/photos/a.325954587420412.100366.170692559613283/654097504606117/?type=3&source=54 I'm not sure on the route you are taking, but if you are taking coast route to TJ crossing this shop is on a verrry cycle friendly route. Smaller shop, might want to call ahead to see if they have what you need. I stopped by last year while cycling to Baja and the TJ crossing.

These guys are great, very reasonable, and are just south of downtown -- right on the bay along the "Bayshore Bikeway" route, so, you don't have to detour on your way to Mexico: http://www.hubandspokecycleworks.com619-512-1137

Also on your way, if you come into San Diego via Rose Canyon, is Bicycle Warehouse. I can't vouch for their mechanics, but, they should have a large selection of tires. https://bicyclewarehouse.com/pages/pacificbeach

Brookyln Bikes in Normal Heights and Ye Olde Bike Shoppe in La Mesa are honest and affordable, in my opinion the two most important qualities in a mechanic.

Ye Olde Bicycle Shoppe on university (I think it's still there) has great deals on used bikes. Bought a rigid mountain bike that retailed for $800 for $100.

On their site, under the “Brands We Offer” tab, [MJ’s Cyclery](http://www.mjscyclery.com) says that they fix up donated bikes to sell. Perhaps they'd be a resource to seek out local bike co-ops that might sell used bikes.

The days are growing short and it's going to start being cold in the mornings. It will get dark earlier. Although there's never a "bad" time to start cycling, right now is not the best time; probably around April or May would be better. This gives you time to save up and shop around.
Besides a bike, helmet, cable, and lock, you'll probably want a decent backpack, a water bottle or two, leather-palmed bike gloves (for safety and comfort), and eye protection (sun glasses, safety goggles) to keep bugs and dirt out of your eyes. I highly recommend padded bike shorts, too.
For the "winter" (San Diego's version of it), you will probably need lights, front and rear, with rechargeable batteries, a battery charger, wind-proof "ski" gloves, a lycra "ski" hood, knee warmers (you can make from old socks), a wind breaker, and maybe even shoe covers. Why? It gets down into the low 30's and sometimes the 20's very early in the morning. Since you're on a bike, you create your own "wind chill". Your hands will be the first thing to suffer.
Also, if you're working 8 or 9 hours per day, you'll end up riding in the dark at least one way. I recommend riding in early because there is less traffic, and people haven't been drinking yet, typically, at 4:30 or 5:00 am. Hence, the need for lights.
Consider saving up for a half-way decent bike (good shifters, brakes, and wheels). Put the word out - maybe somebody you know has one sitting in their garage and will give you a good price. Else, find a decent bike shop near you, where the people are friendly and take time to answer your questions. When you ride, parts gradually wear out or need adjustments -- you'll be spending more time at the bike shop than you might expect. But that's okay because riding bikes has so many positive benefits and it just feels good (most of the time). You'll need new tubes, tires, chains, brake pads, etc.
So, if you save up and spend just a little more on your bike, you can get a good one from a bike shop for just a little more than the cost of a used one, and the bike shop usually provides free adjustments (brakes, shifters, etc). Also, a good bike shop will make sure you get a bike that fits your body (not too big, nor too small).
It's an investment in yourself, your health. Nobody ever gets old and says, "I wish I hadn't exercised and stayed healthy." Bikes are fun to ride.

You can’t go wrong with Trek or Specialized...there are better bikes then those two brands and some not so great but it’s a safe start in your search.

Bike Garage in PB - the owner Ish is a great guy. He will help you find what you need in your budget, not snooty like some bike shops can feel to me. I would say, don't feel like you need to buy a bunch of stuff at the start. You will know what you need once you are on the road. Bankers Hill is a great neighborhood to bike! I started biking about a year ago and am really in love. Enjoy!
