In general, the best paint jobs are the ones that had the most prep. Cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning of the existing seats will go a long way. Sanding and prepping, cleaning the sanding dust, and more cleaning, will yield much better results. And, lastly. Go slow. Don't douse it with one coat. Multiple, thin coats will yield the best even finish. These are all spray painting best practices that can apply here.
