COIT usually does well, we've used them numerous times for the house and the apartments. Stanley Steamer too. There's usually coupons for them and/or Stanley Steamer in the Val-Pack. Note: They do NOT move your furniture around. I will say that renting a rug doctor from Safeway for $25 (plus solutions) is not terribly difficult and doesn't take too much time but if you have very dirty carpets (or you're lazy LOL) use a truck service. I've do this sometimes as I get to be more particular about where/how parts are done.

Stanley Steamer had an ad on tv this morning for $99. I think you have to use the promo code SPECIAL - you can assume I'm truly bored since I don't own any carpet.....lol

Target is probably your best bet. But if you want to save some serious money, you should try what I affectionately call the Chinese junk stores. You can find them in China town, on clement or on Irving. The prices are impossible to beat, and I actually think they are a lot of fun. They are usually listed as hardware or kitchen supply stores but the variety of goods available in a small store can be incredible.

You ain't in Kansas anymore. The lack of Wal-Mart's is one of the many things that makes this city great.

Costco? More options in Serramonte.

City Target is your best alternative for "I need something and I don't know what" store. I actually don't know if it specifically named City Target now or not... pitchforks just appear if I don't refer to the place as that... or "shitty" target.

I'm not sure about in the city, but there's a plaza in Emeryville with a bunch of big box stores (Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, OfficeDepot, Toys R Us, Michael's, Sports Authority), and down the road there's also an IKEA and a mall called Bay Street Emeryville. It's pretty easily accessible. Just take BART to MacArthur (when they stop striking) and switch onto the Emery-Go-Round's Powell line which will take you there. The Emery-Go-Round is a free bus too. If you're in that area, you might want to consider bringing a bike since it's one of the entrances to the walking/biking trail for the new Bay Bridge's east span, which is pretty cool. I'm suggesting a bike because the distance is quite long for walking. If you're driving by chance, you might also want to check out nearby Berkeley Bowl near Ashby and Hollis. It's a really cool grocery store with lots of things you wouldn't find anywhere else. That plus the thousands of Walgreens around here, I'm not sure what else you'd need from a Walmart that you can't find elsewhere. Alternatively, just do what a lot of us do and order from Amazon. If you have prime it's usually free 2-day shipping. The selection can't be beat.

Clement street between 2 nd and Park Presidio has some "cheaper" places to buy household items. Bonus - can stop at Burma Superstar and get a bite to eat.

Some of the discount stores (Ross, Burlington Coat Factory, etc) downtown carry Wal-mart-ish things like you mentioned. Maybe not furniture though.

Bed bath and beyond at 9 th & Bryant. Small mom and pops on clement street or Irving. Daiso in japantown. Or Serramonte/Colma for big box jumbo target.

Moved here from Florida myself. It is an adjustment moving to the city from the land of parking lots and big box stores. You'll get used to it. Well, except for the lack of Publix subs. I think City Target is your best bet for the kind of super store you are after. I mean there's also lots of department stores downtown (like Macy's), plus the big mall. But it sounds like you are looking for a large discount retailer? I guess you could also see if there's a local hardware store like an Ace in your neighborhood. I second the recommendation to check out Clement street. Specifically, check out the Ka Mei. The have a bunch of household items - way cheap! edit: whoops, mixed up my markets. Corrected store name to Ka Mei
