Cheap/bulk purchase locations for Philips Hue bulbs? I'm in the process of redoing my basement into a rec room (I refuse to use the term "man cave") and I'd really like...
soukietron replied:
Regular bulbs with a smart light switch? Is that not an option?
AnalphaBestie replied:
> If there's no way to get a better deal on Hue bulbs Not that iam aware of, and I'am looking like 3 years. Black friday on amazon may be your best bet.
SoWereDoingThis replied:
People have been posting better deals from bb&b as well as Home Depot but they seem to be in store only.
heathere3 replied:
Woot often has them listed. I've slowly dinner my whole house with woot refurbs, and not had a bad one yet.
n3rding replied:
I just buy in one of the various sales, depending on the bulb often you are best to get a starter kit and sell the hub.

Sylvania A19 colour dimmable light bulbs go for 32$ / 4 bulbs.

I'm not sure, but I have 2 if you want them.

Mercari.com seams to have good prices on Hue. Allot of them are below retail. Some of the listings spell Philips with two L's (Phillips).

Relatedly, where can we buy bulk dumb philips LEDs? Looking for those nice warm glow ones which amazon doesn’t seem to carry as much, and I need dozens of them

I bought 2 ikea bulbs at the weekend and added them to my hue bridge. They are on par with the colours from the gen 1 bulbs which was perfect as the room they went in already had gen 1 bulbs.

A smart switch is probably the cheapest and possibly best choice if you are just looking to turn on the lights and dim them as a group. There are switches that do not rely on a hub at all but run off your wi-fi. I have a Belkin Wemo installed in one of my rooms and it is fairly reliable. They make a smart dimmer that may meet all your needs. Next option if you are wanting to play with configurations of lighting would be a switch and wi-fi controllable bulbs. The TP link bulbs come to mind and can sometimes be found in bulk packs on Amazon. One thing to keep in mind is that these will not work if the wall switch is off. Lots of options are out there but the Hues are expensive for your needs.

Ikea TRÅDFRI bulbs as well as the corresponding gateway (required to integrate with Alexa unless you already have a Zigbee gateway) and remote (you need one to do the pairing) are unexpensive and work well: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/cat/smart-lighting-36812/

the 4 x bulb starter kits on prime day or black friday and then sell the hubs. I think I got them for 109, which is roughly $27.50 a bulb, and then ebay all but two of the hubs for $30. did this four times. so in the end about $23.60 a bulb. also set up price watch alerts for the strips, motion detector, and the single bulbs in camelcamelcamel. that's pretty much how I converted my entire house. took about a year of waiting on various sales, but I was not in a rush. if you wanna do everything now, and at once, yea, plan to spend a few extra hundred.
springer70 replied:
The Philips hue non-color bulbs (white shades only) are much cheaper. I think they're only $15 each
propagated replied:
best I’ve done is $20/bulb at bestbuy holidays sales
roofuskit replied:
Tradfri by Ikea, fraction of the price.

These meet your requirements if you are stuck on Philips https://www.homedepot.com/p/Philips-Color-and-Tunable-White-BR30-LED-65W-Equivalent-Dimmable-Smart-Wi-Fi-Wiz-Connected-Wireless-Light-Bulb-4-Pack-555615/310803945 4 for $55. Using separately controlled bulbs will allow for different lighting scenes without changing the switch.
smkythefrignbear replied:
If you don’t have trim kits already look at the hue retrofit kits. I have these in my basement and love the finished look and ability to change the white temperature of the lights. https://www.homedepot.com/p/303993123

If you don't need color, you can get 4 packs of standard, dimmable a19 hue bulbs for \~$45 at best buy and amazon.
johndrewjr replied:
TP-Link dimmer wall switches work very nicely and don’t require a hub. Works directly with Alexa.
ikingrpg replied:
There are other color bulbs out there you know
tomkaz replied:
Thanks everybody. For some reason, a smart switch totally slipped my mind. And I've got a couple TP-Link on/off switches already installed. I will now go shopping for Lutron Caseta switches, as one does not argue with the majority opinion of Redditors. Thanks everybody!
SFMissionMark replied:
Good job refusing to use man cave.
chaihalud replied:
IKEA tradfi bulbs are compatible with the hue bridge and check all your boxes.
DoctorTurbo replied:
It sounds like you can get away with a Smart Dimmer. Lutron Caseta is a great choice if you don’t have neutral wires, it requires it’s own hub. Alternatively GE z wave dimmers are great too if you already have a z wave hub
andrewtheandrew replied:
I would think z-wave smart switches from GE would last you a lot longer and respond much faster. With z-wave you can have nearly instant local control, hue has to go to the cloud and back. In my house when I turn on the lights all the z-wave lights come on instantly. The hue bulbs take 3-4 seconds to start and they come on one by one. Pretty annoying. Anyone else have that same issue? Also without local control if the internet goes down you can't turn on your lights. Z-wave smart switch you don't need internet, and you can even use the physical switch the old fashioned way if your hub dies. My home is on the Wink hub with the hue hub as well.
lastingd replied:
Regular bulbs and a smart lightswitch. Use Hue for accent lighting, in lamps, uplighters, light troughs, wall illumination etc. My recommendation is always leave the general white lighting alone, by all means add smart dimmers. Add additional very smart lighting for accent and task lighting. In my home, I have exactly that. Lightstrips and Lamps fitted with RGB bulbs add accent lighting, general lighting is warm white led GU10 s, my desk lighting is voice controlled, I am sure you get the idea.
target_meet_arrow replied:
Sounds like you want a dimmable smart switch, not bulbs. As long as you have a neutral wire it should be pretty easy to find one that works for you. Just make sure it can handle the power you are running through it. I love hue products but it's not what you want for your setup.
thepinkbunnyboy replied:
For alternatives, I personally have both Yeelights (~~$150~~ $260 for 12 with rgb) and TP Link white bulbs ($180 for 12, white only) in my house. All smart bulbs in this price point can be finicky sometimes, but I've never had a problem with either once I had my settings set up in my Google Home (both work with Alexa AFAIK). Edit, neither require a hub.
poltavsky79 replied:
Get Gledopto bulbs
Nikumba replied:
Innr Smart Bulb are a good alternative, work natively with hue hub. The company was formed by ex-hue staff $23 for two [https://www.amazon.com/Philips-SmartThings-Google-Required-Dimmable/dp/B07SD8SGZT?ref\_=ast\_bbp\_dp](https://www.amazon.com/Philips-SmartThings-Google-Required-Dimmable/dp/B07SD8SGZT?ref_=ast_bbp_dp)
durtduhdurr replied:
$8 each. Take a look at the bulbs from Wyze.
JJ-KwiK replied:
Use a smart switch if possible. Cheaper and better. If not, and you're dead set on smart bulbs that work with Hue, get Ikea Trådfri bulbs. They work with Hue and are a fraction of the price.
