I had a great experience with [Ann's Driving School](http://www.fearlessdriver.com), but they are SF-based and will charge more to go down to South Bay.

I used South Valley Driving School back at the end of 2017/early 2018. Passed on my first try. Can't complain. [https://www.southvalleydrivingschool.com/](https://www.southvalleydrivingschool.com/)

Also following, in my mid 20 s with no license as well. A lot of my peers have taken their test at Daly City and have said it’s pretty easy. That being said, I’ve watched videos the SF DMV driving test on YT and it doesn’t look as complicated as ppl make it out to be - I think people prefer Daly City because of the wider roads and lesser traffic.

Did the test when I arrived in the US in my 30 s. I went with Ann's Driving School: http://www.fearlessdriver.com/ great instructors and did all the admin for the test. I went to Daly City. I did a few practices in SF and found the roads to be too unpredictable - trucks unloading on the side of the road, people walking out in the middle of the road, cards dodging others. moment that broke me was when I got stuck in a 4 way because the car in front stopped suddenly as a woman jumped into the middle of the road with a skirt and no underpants and bent over then the lights turned red. Daly City was a lot quieter and more predictable. I'd strong recommend that.

Walnut Creek native here, I've heard people come from surrounding areas (East Bay) to take the DMV test there. A bit far from SF but not too bad these days!
For reference though, I did my DL process at 16 y/o and did the required 3 driving lessons, so each lesson was very systematic. First lesson, learning driving basics in a quiet neighborhood, 2nd lesson freeway practice, 3rd lesson was just doing the exact test route several times with test tips (e.g. wear a ponytail/dangly earrings if you're a girl so it's more obvious that you're turning your head). I've heard from my college friends they did not all take the exact route during their lessons (elsewhere in the state), so if you do take formal lessons, I suggest doing at least one in your chosen DMV city and asking if they can take you on the test route!

Def recommend the Peninsula for your test. Try Redwood City or San Mateo

There's also the El Cerritos DMV. Very quiet if you try for a 10 am or so appointment. So get at least 1-2 classes with a driving instructor from around the area of your test! They usually know some tips and tricks for the specific routes for that test center, and have you practice them

I got my license last month - I'm 27!
I kept flunking in SF because of my anxiety. The instructors aren't exactly friendly people. Driving schools did not help. Finally passed in Daly City.
Drove my new Tesla through the SF DMV route last week to black pink's "how you like that". Felt great!
I did the Ann's fearless driver driving school thing and it was a little helpful I guess but I'd recommend giving the test in Daly City. Hollister and Gilroy are also great (but really far away). Good cars today need a lot less effort than the driving school vehicles that have taken a real beating.
You'll see a lot of people in their 20s giving the test - no reason to be embarrassed. Most immigrants come here in our 20s.

I got my license last month at age 27 as well! I took it in SF and had a good experience. My driving instructor practiced the testing route with me multiple times. I highly recommend him and his rates are really good which was important to me as I had to take quite a few lessons and no one to practice with. Dm me for his details.

Luckily, passed the road portion at SF DMV. .. ( there is a trick. Hope examiners don't read this.) Person tested AND her companion (even more) knew the streets around the DMV **very** well. **AND did a** practice run exactly on the same streets. Turns out, 100% of the exam was on the same practice run (I think). Yes, during the sucessful exam (not the first try..

No need to feel embarrassed. I think there're prob a lot of people who're in your shoes who're as old or older. I, too, didn't get my license til I was 25-26 and didn't have that much driving experience except some practice on side streets. And,.. shortly after taking my driving test, I learned how to drive a stick in the city on my own. (Not born in the city, but transplant from from the midwest.) I think a good option would be to check yelp for good reviews, but maybe taken with a grain of salt, then pick the best of your options. For myself, I only had the yellow pages and I think I went with the cheapest. I think driving schools only use automatics so that makes it much easier. There were a few sessions (can't remember how many but it was the standard #) spent driving around with an instructor, and they let me use their car for the driving test.
I echo others view that the streets are less travelled now than in the past, so that works in your favor. Daly City is a very good option too. If you have friends who have cars and you're still feeling uneasy (and if you haven't done this so far. ) ask them if you can practice with their car to build your confidence.

conventional wisdom is daly city, but the streets of SF are relatively empty now

If you don’t mind heading out a bit further, Vallejo and Walnut Creek are apparently easy to pass at. I went to the Vallejo one in August to take my road test and it seems that social distancing/Covid safety was pretty strictly enforced. I was in and out in under an hour

I took my test at the Daly City DMV. Mainly because it was easy to get an appointment there. One of the instructors took me on the freeway for one exit that caught me off-guard. Just a heads up. All the best for your test!
chuckallah replied:
I actually had to take mine at the Santa Clara DMV because Daly City had no appointments. The time to get there was a bit annoying but the test route was easy! Wide roads, good mix of residential and main streets, and not too busy.

I took my test recently and I’m in my 20 s too so no sweat. Especially since we’re in a city with bus routes everywhere. I heard that Daly City’s exam was easier because of less cars, but I just took it SF anyway. People made it out to be harder than it was in my opinion. Good luck!
