First things first, did you try refreshing the machine? You probably have some degree of bloat and just nuking it and starting over is probably going to make it run pretty fast. That said, Ubuntu flavors can be great. "Ubuntu" terminology can be confusing. Most of the time when you reference it, you're talking about the "engine" so to speak. Basically Ubuntu Server, which has no desktop environment (GUI). It boots to the command line. The "flavors" you hear about add a GUI element to it. Some are lighter than others: Lubuntu Xubuntu Ubuntu MATE in particular. (I used to really like Lubuntu but I've moved my lighter machines to MATE because they aren't that much heavier and offers a few nice QOL things like being able to type Win -> application I want to run. And the desktop looks a little nicer). Since it runs Win10 well, you can probably run some heavier ones as well, like Kubuntu. Depending on the specs, vanilla Ubuntu desktop (which uses Gnome 3) or Ubuntu Budgie could work well too. I mainboot Budgie myself but it's on a really powerful machine, might not be a perfect match. Linux Mint is based off of Ubuntu but adds some proprietary packages. Its default environment is Cinnamon (so you could sort-of think of Linux Mint as Ubuntu Cinnamon to help keep track of all the terminology). You can also get Linux Mint in other desktop environments that Ubuntu also offers that I mentioned above (such as Linux Mint MATE). I'm not 100% where Cinnamon falls in the spectrum but it is a popular distribution and has a good GUI so it would also be worth checking out. TL;DR though, if you just want a single recommendation, I'd probably start with Ubuntu MATE and see how the machine runs on that. The SSD recommendation was great too. Swap out the current HDD and install linux on the new SSD. They can always have a backup and you can install Windows on the new SSD if they don't like linux. They can try every distro they want then without even touching their current Windows isntall.

Linux Mint is quite good, surprisingly it worked better than Ubuntu on my very old 1 gb RAM machine (don't remember which processor).
lexpython replied:
I think you're looking for [Lubuntu](https://lubuntu.net/), a lightweight OS that can be booted from a flash drive. I've also installed it on an SD, so when the SD isn't there, it boots to Windows. Lubuntu rocks on older computers, I have it running well on a Vista-era computer (that's actually also running Win10 just fine). There are other ways to speed up your Win10 computer as well, like using Autostart to turn off all the junk and using Antivirus other than McAffee or Norton, a nice lightweight one like Avast Free (once it's stripped down).
Kazumara replied:
You haven't told us quite how constrained that laptop is. Can we assume it has 4GB of RAM or more? For non-technical people who come from Windows a common suggestion is to use a Linux distribution with the Cinnamon Desktop Environment. It's probably best to get it with [Linux Mint](https://linuxmint.com/). I think the KDE Plasma desktop should also be fine. Perhaps in the KDE Neon distribution.

Why not just upgrade with more ram and an SSD? Especially if he's already familiar with Windows.

You can boot Ubuntu from a thumb drive. https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-windows#0 My mother had a computer with a defective motherboard that kept having problems recognizing two different system drives. She decided that she had it with computers and did not want to pay to fix the computer. So, I put Ubuntu on a thumb drive, with only 4 gig of storage, and it ran as well as windows on her hard drive. I do not recommend actually running a computer off the thumb drive, but it makes for a nice demo of an alternative.

I think I'd also recommend one of the more popular LXDE distros, like [Lubuntu](https://lubuntu.me/about/).

I'm using Linux Mint on a Samsung Netbook NC10. Runs fine and is enough like Mac/Windows to be understood by casual users. There may be faster versions out there, but if you were running Windows 10 before it will probably be fine. Certainly easy enough to try out using a thumb drive.

Kubuntu 18.04, it installs many printers automatically if they are detected on either USB or the Network and despite its bad reputation KDE can run quite smooth and using low memory on devices that are 10 years old.

Sounds like any Linux distro would fit your needs. Printer support is great since it uses CUPS, which is also used in Macs. Security is also top notch. [Ubuntu](https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-install-ubuntu-desktop#0) is generally my go to recommendation. Since it's by far the most popular Linux distro, it is the easiest to find help online if a problem comes up.
