How are you cleaning the pee stains? If it on a fabric couch, the smell is going to sink into the cushions. Maybe try this method if you haven't already www.catsofaustralia.com/clean-cat-urine-mattress.htm. Also the automated litter box may be startling him if it makes a noise at any time. Has anything else changed in the house? The fact that he is puking as well makes it puzzling as it does sound more of a health issue if both are going on simultaneously. Cats will pee outside of teh litter box if there is an underlying medical issue (even like arthiritis). If he is now puking frequently with no hairballs, then it may be linked to the peeing. Have you tried anti-anxiety meds for him?

It sounds like you've tried everything, but I recommend you message a couple of cat rescues or animal behaviourists to get their tips. Anytime I have had an unsolvable cat problem, they've been able to help me. I don't know what your litter box situation is, but you need one liter box per cat plus one, so that's 2 litter boxes for one cat. Litter boxes are creap, get a few sheap ones and stick different kinds of litter in them. I strongly recommend Cat Attract too. You'll need to use Nature's Miracle enzymatic cleaner, the special one for cat urine, and use according to package directions. I am not sure what you mean when you say you tried covering the couch and it didn't work- surely if the cat urinated on a tinfoil or plastic covered couch, that wouldn't effect the fabric underneath? It may be a good idea to use wipe-clean fake leather couches and armchairs. You can often find them for quite cheap. It's easier than anything else you've tried or suggested.

If you are looking for an orthopedic surgeon, Alan Shulman at Animal Medical Center in West Los Angeles is good. He will give you a strong opinion on whether surgery is needed or not. He does surgery really well too. He did an amazing surgery for the other GSD in the family but said no to my hip surgery 'cause of other stuff. If you are not interested in surgery or the vet says no surgery, than animal physical therapy, cold laser and acupuncture are really good at CARE Rehab in West LA. You can learn to do the physical therapy exercises yourself once they show you so you can go back to SB and do them.

When I lived in LA, my dog Chyna (RIP) had a bilateral hip replacement done by Dr. Kirk Wendelburg of Animal Specialty Group. He is one of the best hip specialists in the world. He said that Chyna's hips were the some of the worst he has ever seen and the surgeries helped prolong her life by many years. He was very honest with me as well since my other dog at the time had mild hip dysplasia and he told me that said dog would not need surgery (unlike another vet clinic that claimed that he did hence my journey to Dr. Wendelburg).

Karrinne- I don't know if there is such a thing! We go to Dr Holmes at La Cumbre. La Cumbre is pricey but on other hand she knows her stuff so she'll figure it out & get it right the first time. Sometimes you end up paying more with a less experienced vet in the long run. Hope your pup is feeling better real soon!

Airport Animal Hospital is great! They care about helping your pet and if they need to return for the same problem they are understanding and will wave the office visit charge. Dr Lewis is wonderful!

I jut read about the "topic you don't want to discuss" they also were so understanding and kind when we had to put our family dog down. They let us visit everyday for the 4-5 days they were caring for her. Christina there was so loving and gentle with Chana. I can't tell you how wonderful Airport Animal Hospital is!
