There are a lot of nice neighborhoods near the north side. All depends on how much you are wanting to spend. I would recommend to get pre approved for a loan, unless paying cash.

I went with a buyers agent. His fee was collected from the sellers. I can't remember his name, but any buyers agent will do especially since you are not selling a home. Also, Northshore Triangle is the best neighborhood in the city.

I'm in the final stages of buying a house in River Park, I worked with a lady from Remax 100 on Logan, I'm pretty happy with her. She answered my questions when I had them, and kept me in the loop on what was going on. She offered me some good advice that I sometimes took, and sometimes didn't. As a first time home buyer there are some programs I'm taking advantage that she was familiar with. I'm also using Ruoff to handle my mortgage, been pretty easy going with them so far as well.

I literally just bought a house yesterday. I loved my agent. She is super nice and is always super positive. She made the extra effort to make sure my wife and I weren't biting off more than we can afford while also making sure we were in a safe neighborhood. 10/10, will be using her again when it comes time to buy another house. This site is pretty cool for ASSISTing in determining the safety of the area. http://www.mylocalcrime.com/#41.689055%2C%20-86.23247 I have spoken with co-workers who grew up in this area and the statement "Anywhere inside of highways (US 20 and 80/90) aren't good areas" seems to get pretty universal agreement. Although it depends on your definition of a good area. It is not uncommon to see areas with 0 crime outside of the city. Also the price on some of those houses vs value is pretty good (value in terms of what you are getting for the price not its "potential value" just because of the cost of living for South Bend).

I'm a fairly new home owner in the area. I wasn't super impressed with the realtor I worked with, but love the area I ended up in. I would recommend the area just south of Edison and east of Twyckenham for inexpensive houses in a nice neighborhood. I have the best neighbors ever.
