I think it goes without saying that a poorly made fireplace can lead to inhalation issues, fire, death, etc. With that said, find a company that does fireplaces... don't use CraigsList, don't just "take some guy's recommendation on the internet".

We had to have our entire chimney rebuilt. Expert Chimney Services was the company we used. I'm not sure if they travel, doesn't hurt to ask if they know of someone in your area. 315-469-5004
