I've heard that the gym on campus is really small. Anyone recommend a good gym near campus that isn't too pricey?
Cailin O. replied:
The McKinnon gym is free but small, although they do have a nice pool. Ian Stewart is the other athletic complex, and they're $40 a semester

The weight room in the McKinnon building is small, yes, BUT.... the Ian Stewart Complex has the largest university weight room/gym in Western Canada. Check it out http://vikesrec.uvic.ca/about/facilities.php Construction on the new Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities has just started and will be ready in 2015. http://www.uvic.ca/carsa/
Is there a gym close to Uvic? If so, how much is that? Thanks.
Anya M. replied:
There is a gym on campus called Mckinnon which is free to students but it is pretty small. There is also Ian Stewart Complex up the road which is the bigger Uvic affiliated gym and is only 80 bucks for September-April

Does anyone here have a membership to the Esquimalt Recreation Center?
Thoughts or recommendations? I live a few blocks away and looking at options for gyms.
JimCookie W. replied:
Both the Esquimalt Rec Centre and the Naden gym are great facilities.
Logan C. replied:
Great Rec site and Staff (Admittedly I am biased. ;-) )They have a deal on now http://www.esquimalt.ca/parksRecreation/
does anyone know what the uvic gym timings are? and do we need our student card to get in?
Jennette M. replied:
We need our student cards to get in. The only exception is the weight room at the Ian Stewart complex building, there's a separate fee to use it. And I believe the gym timetable can be found on the uvic vikes website.
SuiMan L. replied:
The Weight Centre Pass is $74 from Sept~Apr($39 for single term) and $105 for the whole year. The complex is really close, probably about 10 minutes walk from campus bus stop.
Sean B. replied:
And to put the cost in perspective, the Ian Stewart complex is the largest recreation/exercise facility in Western Canada, if I remember correctly.
is there a gym? and if so how much does it cost? i really don't want to gain freshman 15 :s
Cailin O. replied:
Nicole's right. I almost considered getting a membership at the Ian Stewart gym but in the middle of winter when it's cold and rainy out ... it was hard enough to convince myself to go to the McKinnon gym on campus. Wait until you get to UVic and go through the McKinnon complex and if you don't like it, you can buy a membership at the ISC.
Where is GYM 1--10? I have an exam there. Is it the actual gym?
Mike A. replied:
Mckinnon Gym, rows 1 to 10. You will be writing your exam at a desk with a separate chair. Bring your student ID (or other valid ID), and a jacket in case you get cold. I would recommend only bringing to the exam what you need and can fit in your jacket pockets so that you don't need to leave your bag at the front of the room. There is usually an announcement sent out by UVic to not bring your laptop in your backpack as a) you cant use it, and b) its really easy for someone to walk off with it, while you are writing your exam.
Looking for a new place to lift close to my house (View Royal/Westshore area). Also wouldn't mind a reliable training partner. I'll take care of all of your program...
Carlo M. replied:
Club Phoenix in Langford is really good. And if you're really lucky you might get a glimpse of me flexing in front of the mirror all oiled up and wearing a tank top that says "do you even lift, bro" lol
