Just to throw this out there Jason Miller we need a large animal Veterinary clinic up here there are enough farms to support it. Best one we have is Puget Sound Vet...

You can call Dr. Pol. I've seen the TV show.

Chuckanut Valley Veterinary Clinic in Burlington, is a mixed animal practice and very regularly visits upriver for many small and large farms. They are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no questions asked, for large animal emergencies. They have some excellent doctors, like Dr. Joe Powers, who specializes in herd health and farm planning, as well as keeping the small animals on the farm healthy! He offers discount farm calls when multiple farms are group scheduled, which may be a great thing to ask about and organize with other farms in the area! Their number is (360)757-3722. Good luck!
Eric C. replied:
Chuckanut is good yes we checked them out but again many of us small farms can't afford 85$ just to drive out not counting the actual vet fees for an emergency and they generally want there money up front. Puget Sound Vet works with payment plans and they are the ones we go to if we can't do something ourselves. Our biggest help has been networking with our other farms up here, I only mentioned this as ideas for needs up here has been brought up before so I mentioned it.

When Mt Vernon Animal Hospital was owned & run by Tom Ray, the vet, he, if on call, would see small pet emergencies at his clinic in Mt Vernon Animal Hospital. His oath & many other vet's oath has zero to do with them going to a fallen animal anywhere. How many HUMAN doctors even do that ever now? He didn't go out on emergency calls unless you were a damn good friend. Don't know about new people there or if they handle farm animals & if they do if they go out for emergencies. A small fortune required if they do you can safely bet. Know Tom didn't. A lot of people who don't actually own whatever the critter is would be blown away by fees charged for a vet to come this far out. They are animal Doctors & don't come cheaply. The very nature of an emergency makes planning more difficult. I think a mixed practice-large & small, one vet operation may do all right here. The fact that we're upriver doesn't preclude a vet automatically. Like human doctors veterinarians may be good, bad or mediocre. A medical degree is not a guarantee of quality. A vet may just be happy to be away from down river violence as well. Not fun to come to work & someone was freshly murdered outside your door. That has happened in Mt Vernon by vet office & school on La Venture. I think a vet practice here is an excellent idea to talk about & see if any viability to it!
Brandi K. replied:
Lisa, Chuckanut Valley Veterinary Clinic owns LaVenture Veterinary Clinic now (Mt. Vernon Animal Hospital) Dr. Ray handed over the reins and sold to them when he retired, a full service satellite clinic for the clients in that area:) So they will still do mixed animals, likely by making the appointment with one of the docs at CVVC, and still being on call for large animal emergencies 24/7:)
Eric C. replied:
yup our large animals go to Puget Sound Vet group and dog and cat go to Cascade Veterinary
Lisa D. replied:
He must've changed name before it sold as it was always Mt Vernon Animal Hospital or more likely new owners kept the name. Tom was almost always a one man show & built the pet hospital as well. Built to suit him.He waited a long time to retire, lol
Lisa D. replied:
I used to go to Thomas Ray in Mt Vernon then & still to Parker Way Vet off of College Way. Had to make an emergency run from up here & that extra time could've cost me a pet lately & did cost one before as both vets in Mt Vernon too far away in true emergency. A vet of BIG & SMALL would probably do well here if they didn't try to get too fancy or expensive-more expensive I should say. Tom Ray now retired but would tell anyone to go to Parker. Both vets there are great, they don't try to bilk w/extra tests, meds, etc & once they know who you are will take reasonable payments.

The vet office closest to Upriver, N Cascade from Sedro Woolley, treats bovine, equine, and other large farm-type animals - and they have three doctors on staff. Chuckanut Valley in Burlington also treats large animals. So does Mount Vernon Veterinary Hospital. I'm pretty sure Anacortes Animal Hospital does as well. That's pretty good coverage. Since vets take the same kind of oath human doctors do in regard to patient care, I think any of the above named offices would have vets on staff that would be more than willing to travel anywhere in the county for a middle-of-the-night animal emergency. Sure, it might cost more, but it costs more when we have to go the ER, too. All vet offices have answering services (just like human doctors) specifically to get in touch with a vet in case of any emergency. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but I think the chances of getting a a vet office here on an ongoing, permanent 7-days-aweek basis are slim to none. As long as vets who treat large animals are willing and able to travel to treat, the need really isn't there. It's a great thought, but I think for such a limited population, it's unlikely to happen. Like I said, not trying to be negative, just realistic.
Eric C. replied:
and have you ever paid there rates? also last we checked with the Sedro Woolley Vet they only treat Equine nothing else for large animal. We chose Puget Sound Vet Group for a reason would just be much more convenient for many of us if we had a clinic up here
Ok so I have a question I used to have parakeets & every 5-6 months I would have to change their perches because they would bite them & completely destroy them. Now I...
For my doggie peeps - need the name of a reliable repro vet in the Dallas TX area. Dottie? Scott? Anyone?
Dottie J. replied:
Dr . Kirk Esmond@Josey Ranch or Dr Shelley Hempel@Sasche Vet
Lew O. replied:
Dr Esmond!!!!!!!!
Ann G. replied:
Becky I have had Dr. Hempel work with some of my breeder friends there in Tx, she is very good to work with and can deal with frozen being shipped to her ahead of time. Has a great track record for implants.
