Does anyone have a recommendation for a neurologist in the area (15 miles or so) that specializes or has had a good reputation with migraines?
John B. replied:
Dr. (DR G) Gunawardane , Neurologist (301) 490-6085. 7625 Maple Lawn Blvd, Suite 100. Fulton, MD 20759 DR G is very Good. She took a lot of time with me and is on the cutting edge. MY only complaint is that the apts seem to take a long time.
Karen J. replied:
Dr G in Maple Lawn. She is amazing!
Dara S. replied:
Hands down the BEST around is Dr. Buchholz@Johns Hopkins in Greenspring. Further than 15 miles but WELL worth the drive! (410) 583-2830.

I highly recommend acupuncture. I had migraines for 15+ yrs, even with Imitrex shots weekly. After 2 months of acupuncture, I was migraine free and have been for 16+ years. We offer acupuncture and Chinese Herbs at The Still Point locations. Many of our clients come for migraines and have had great success. If you prefer a neurologist, Dr. Kao is very good, he's in Columbia.
Kim P. replied:
Dr Marcia Ribeiro Mid Atlantic Headache Institute410-602-1999.
Eileen B. replied:
I can't speak to his capability though since I've not seen him. A note though is that he doesn't take my insurance, but neither does Dr. Ribeiro. She only takes govt. insurance like medicare and medicaid. I pay out of pocket because she is worth it.
Robyn S. replied:
Dr. Merrill Ansher in Columbia by HCGH.
Kim P. replied:
Dr Ribeiro is a little further out, but definitely worth the trip. She is in Pikesville on Reisterstown Rd.
Michelle S. replied:
So hate migraines. I go to Dr Kao next to the hospital. He is good but his office staff and office manager Molly are amazing. Pm me if you have questions. I have tried many "routes" in the Columbia area
I have a question, does anyone on here suffer from bad migraines? If so do you know a good neurologist and what are you taking to prevent them? Thanks!
Debbie A. replied:
Have you considered trying taking something natural before doctors? I have been taking Plexus for weight loss (but it's not only for weight loss) and I have heard testimonies of several people that have had migraines and since they started on it, the headaches went away. It's a pink powder that you mix with water, shake it and drink, kind of tastes like Crystal Light. It has been helping people with many issues, it's easy, natural and a whole lot cheaper than docs and meds. I liked the products so much, I started to sell them. If you want to read some testimonies, you can go to my FB group page, Plexus on the beach with Debbie Independent Distributor. If you want to try it, you can get a 7 day sample pack, go to PlexusOnTheBeach.com and you can order. I hope this helps

I used to get them. I didn't see a neurologist I saw Dr. Kohlerman with BW Primary, he is an expert in headaches and migraines.
Kristina K. replied:
Dr Kohlerman at BE Primary care had helped me a lot. I have chronic migraines. Used to have 2-3 a week. Now I am down to 2-3 a month. MRI was all a neurologist offered me and drug that didn't work- the chiropractor made it feel worse- PT didn't work and made it worse too. Dr Kohlerman took time, and tried different meds- he has helped me a lot.
Michelle B. replied:
Kim Mills Acupuncture made mine worse, I'd go there without a migraine and leave with a migraine.
Michelle B. replied:
Kristina King-Batarseh I saw Dr Kohlerman yesterday, he gave me something to try and a nausea med, the side effects from them both are headaches: / and anxiety, I wish there was a homeopathic cure, I hate all these meds and the horrible side effects. The chiropractor made them better but he got to be to expensive, I'll give that a try again now that I have health insurance. My health insurance will only allow 9 Imitrex a month, that's a joke so I have to pay for it on my own.
Denise S. replied:
Dr. Sara Benjamin Columbia410-730-1212 I've had them for 30 years. She has helped a lot. Pain killers are not the answer. They cause rebounds. Once I accepted that, and listened I got so much better.
Michelle B. replied:
UGH, Thanks Jennifer Shay.
Stacie U. replied:
Michelle Also they say because allergies are so bad this year migraines will be even worse

I have had debilitating migraines since I was four years old. I'm 33 now, and was finally diagnosed with a nuero-vascular genetic disease at age 30 when I had my stroke. My migraines symptoms were (are)vast from bone crushing pain, nausea and vomiting, numbness and tingling on the right side of my body and entire face. 90% of the time, my speech is slurred and I forget words. And a whole bunch of other stuff. Dr. Carolyn Cronin is my neurologist and Dr. Simard is my surgeon (or will be if I ever need the surgery). My neurologist and neurosurgeon are both at University of Maryland Medical Center. They were able to finally diagnose me after 26 years of pure hell and get me on the right medication regiment to ease the amount of migraines I get. Nothing they can do about the pain when I do get them. The pain is the most horrible part, I've given birth twice, broken both collar bones and various fingers and toes, been hit by pitches and line drives in softball and none of it compares to migraine pain. Feel free to PM me with any questions. The most important part is to never give up looking for a cause. By the time I was 22, doctors were telling I was crazy, that my symptoms were in my head, and I needed psychiatric help. Not the case, obviously. Good luck!

Dr Good at University of Maryland Baltimore is excellent. I take Treximet--sumatriptan and naproxan.

Hi Michelle! How long have you had them? What have you tried so far? I have had migraines for 30 years (9 months debilitating) and my son had debilitating migraines for 6 years. He has had three neurologist. We are currently both seeing Dr. Rosenberg at JHU's Headache / Migraine Center at Bayview. There are so many factors and a process to go through depending on what works. If you would like to talk more PM me, so we can talk over the phone.

I have been getting migraines since I was a very young girl. I think they started around 5 or 6. I took Topomax, but in the end it really didn't work for me. I got the nightmares from it. I get an aura, which can last for days. Typically, my tongue and lips go numb, flashing lights and dizziness are the regular things. But the neurologist couldn't figure out a regular drug for me. I have my rescue drugs, Maxalt, which dissolves under my tongue. I get relief in less than 5 minutes, most of the time. The one thing that has helped me the most was seeing a chiropractor. I went from 4 to 6 migraine a month to 2 or 3 a year. Dr. Chuck Palamone has done wonders for me.
Tonya W. replied:
Sorry I do feel for you. I was at my wits end when I was getting them daily I couldn't enjoy my life at all. Could barely work. I was in tears all the time not just from pain but just not getting relief from anything. Dr. Kohlerman tried a few things until the topamax worked. He did say he could give me nerve blocks in the back of my head but I was scared to do that.
Roxanne F. replied:
I went to Dr Kao's practice, I believe he is still at Progress Way. I take a beta blocker and anti-depressant to help prevent the migraines and if they get too bad I take an imitrex and naproxen sodium. Also cold pack on head, heating pad on feet--sounds weird but helps. Try to figure out your triggers and avoid them. Mine is barometric changes so can't do much there and stress. Good luck. Verapamil and Serzone for me now. Been going on for going on 40 yrs now. The only time I didn't have them was when I was pregnant.
Jeannie B. replied:
Dr Luke kao in the medical arts building in Columbia. I tried so many different preventives and nothing worked. Now I get botox for them and it works plus no crows feet or forehead lines
