Ohio State offers a midwife option. We were very pleased with our experience.

[CHOICE Midwives](http://www.choicemidwives.org/) provides homebirth and doula services. After four homebirths, my family can heartily recommend them. I do not believe that there are any non-hospital birthing centers in Ohio, but the doula can accompany you to the hospital and act as your advocate.

It is very likely to be safe to deliver outside of a hospital and the hospital experience can leave something to be desired, but if god forbid, something happens, help in a hospital is too far away for my comfort. It will very likely be fine, but I hope you have thought about the worst case scenarios.

St Anne's offers birthing tubs and many obgyn offices use midwives. I used professionals for women's health and almost all of their uncomplicated babies are born with a midwife rather than an OBGYN. Liza would have delicer d my baby is we didn't end up needing a c section and she's amazing. I don't think we have any non hospital birthing centers though. Luckily, most of our hospitals offer very nice birthing suites and insuite postnatal care for the baby as well.

St Ann's has a birthing center and includes a doula service (free or billed to your insurance at least) if you're interested.

I’ve heard good things about OSU midwives

You may be a little to the party at 17 weeks, but [CHOICE Midwives](https://www.choicemidwives.org) provides both Midwife and Doula services. Their team started in the early 1970 s providing home births and Doula services. They are not affiliated, or beholden to any local hospital or medical practice and provide comprehensive prenatal care and birth eduction. Our four, wonderful children were born at home with CHOICE midwives in attendance. One had his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and one was 11.4 oz. You can work with them in complete confidence.

OSU midwives!! I gave birth 6 years ago and still see them for my annual appointments. You can’t go wrong with any of them!

I have a 10 month old that I delivered at OSU with the midwife team. I was around 20 weeks when I changed my care over to them and it was the best decision I made! I also wanted to have a natural tub birth with the least amount of intervention possible. OSU did offer gas as well as a full water birth option (assuming there were no risks preventing this choice). Unfortunately, I labored at home on my own for way too long so I was only in the hospital a total of 45 min before I delivered. I didn’t have the chance to even get settled into a room and definitely didn’t have time for the water birth. The team was great though and throughout the entire pregnancy I was happy with my care and they were very supportive on allowing me to make choices for myself.

My experience was pre-COVID, but Mt Carmel (St Ann, East, and Grove City) has [a doula program](https://www.mountcarmelhealth.com/find-a-service-or-specialty/doula-services/) where you pay a subsidized rate to have a doula during your birth. You will get whichever doula is on-call, but they have an opportunity to meet the doulas ahead of time so hopefully they aren't a total stranger.
I really liked my primary OB/GYN and she supported my desire for a more natural childbirth, but unfortunately she wasn't the one on-call when I went into labor, so some things didn't quite happen like I expected:
- Pitocin was started even though I was progressing on my own.
- I had continuous fetal monitoring, so I was mostly confined to the bed/around it, rather than being able to walk around the halls.
- I didn't really have a choice in "pushing" positions
Baby is healthy and we had great medical care otherwise, though, so I can't really complain.

I went to Buckeye OB/GYN in Grove City, had my daughter at Grant Hospital. There are 3 or 4 OB's there and you rotate between all for the appointments before birth so whichever is on call you know and they know you during that special moment. I had her naturally with absolutely no meds with no problem at all. Might have gotten lucky with the nurses and other staff in that day, but my experience was fine. They asked me a few times if I wanted something for the pain, but respected me when I said no and didn't push it any further.

Congratulations! If you’re going for a hospital birth, OSU midwives or Westar OBGYN (they deliver at St. Ann’s). OSU is the only hospital in Central Ohio that does gas and air, so if you are set on that option keep that in mind. OSU midwives are probably going to be your best option at that hospital for a more physiological/natural experience. Outside of the OSU midwives, St. Ann’s is the most supportive hospital for natural birth plans. Also seconding the recommendation for the St. Ann’s doula program, which is fantastic.
If you are potentially interested in homebirth, let me know and I can give you some names and contact info.
Also, it is important to have a supportive provider. But also remember that no one is in charge of you and you always get to make your own choices even if you are in a hospital in labor! You may not be able to choose who gets to be with you because of current circumstances, but no one can make you get induced, or make you get any medications you don’t want. I’m biased because I’m a doula, but consider hiring a doula who can help you identify your labor preferences and the best way to achieve them. I’d be happy to give recommendations on doulas or childbirth ed as well. Feel free to pm me for more information on any of this, I’ve attended births at all the hospital systems in Columbus, including during COVID.
