Vet recommendations? Any recommendations in Durham of a good, but inexpensive, vet? We don't need anywhere too fancy. Thanks!

Southpoint animal hospital is great. You can always do banfield, but I am not a huge fan. What part of town are you in?

Carver St. Vet Hospital is amazing. One of the vets there identified a problem that I'd taken my cat to two other vets for. The other vets said "Oh, it's a UTI, let's pop her on antibiotics," each time and this vet said "Hm, you already came in here once for this. Let's take a closer look," and ended up solving a long-term pain issue in my cat. She recommended a combination of medical treatment and adjustments at home, and six months later, it's like I have my old cat back. She's happier, friendlier, and pees in her damn litterbox. Total cost at the vet was $125 for a more detailed urine culture, special food, and so on. I expected $200-$300 for the number of tests I authorized. I have seen that vet in November, January, and June, and each time, she remembered my pet and things we'd talked about. I brought my dog in a few weeks ago and she asked for details about my cat's recovery. I went in once in ~February with my dog, and saw a different vet, who was also excellent. Each time I've been in, the vet has called me a few days later to check in. Not the office, the vet. They're also on the inexpensive side. Banfield's office visit fee is $40. Theirs is $50. Spend the extra ten bucks and go somewhere awesome.:)

From the comments on this thread, you might have made your decision already - looks like most people love their vet - except Banfield. I didn't see any love for this one - I absolutely love Falconbridge animal hospital (http://falconbridgeanimal.com) and at least one friend has told me that they are less expensive and worlds nicer than her previous - which I believe was Banfield.

We have been very happy with Bull City Vet. they also offer alternative options of treatment as well. We have lived in a lot of different places and this is one of our favorites. I dont really know where they fall on the $$ scale but might be worth checking out. http://www.bullcityveterinaryhospital.com/

I've taken both my cats to North Paw on Guess Road for the past few years, and I've been very satisfied with their level of care.

Bahama Rd Vet Hospital is in Bahama, which is about a 20 minute drive outside of Durham, going towards Roxboro. Dr Heavner has been treating my dog since I brought her in as a malnourished, tick covered, wormy puppy. He saved her life after I found her in the woods and even cut me a break by discounting a couple things and not selling me anything I didn't need, because I only had a part time job at the moment. Not to say this is his policy, but he's a sweet guy who cares about animals and he runs a clean, efficient office.:)

I really like Parkwood Animal Hospital over off 55 (near 54/55 intersection in that shopping center). They are good vets, not pushy. Not to be confused with Park Veterinary Hospital, which is a good vet, but very expensive and touch judge-y.

For cats, go to Cat Hospital of Durham and Chapel Hill - http://www.cathospitaldurhamch.com/ My friends with dogs go to Carver Street Animal Hospital and love it - http://carverstreetanimalhospital.com/ Whatever you do, do not, I repeat DO NOT go to Banfield. Those assholes tried to kill my cat and it's expensive as fuck. First of all they convinced me that my cat needed his teeth cleaned. Then when I brought him in (another aspect which sucks because for every treatment they just want you to drop your animal off early in the morning and leave them there all fucking day), they gave him anesthesia which he had an allergic reaction to and almost killed him. They had him for a couple of days to make sure he'd live, then I got to take him home. They told me that he still needed his teeth cleaned and that they would just use a different type of anesthesia for the next appointment. I waited a month or so until my cat was back to normal, took him back to get his teeth cleaned - the same fucking idiot doctor game him the same anesthesia which almost killed him AGAIN except tripled the dosage because it wasn't working. They called me in a panic and asked if he was allergic to anesthesia and I said WTF??? They apparently keep no records of their patients because they didn't know that they had almost killed my cat once before with that shit. I was fucking livid. I went over there, got my poor, sick, barely conscious cat and took him directly to Cat Hospital. Dr. Kirch took great care of him and made sure that he recovered completely from the Banfield fuck-up. She checked out his teeth and said they were fine and did not need to be cleaned at all, let alone a cleaning which would require general anesthesia. Whatever you do, DO NOT go to Banfield.

Thea Staab Carter (Carter Mobile Animal Care) is a mobile vet who does cats and dogs (exotics, too!). I think her costs are a lot less than area clinics, plus, she comes to you so your pets aren't stressed out like at a clinic.

I absolutely love Dr. Tyson at Tyson animal hospital in south Durham. I have friends from all over the triangle that go to see her. She has been amazing with a variety of ailments from all of my dogs, and everyone who works there knows us. They also do boarding and acupuncture as well as minor surgeries. She also has very close contacts with a lot of the vets at state in case the worst happens. Appointments are easy to get and her rates are very very reasonable.

Might seem like an counter-intuitive since it's a national chain but I've had really good experiences with the vets at Banfield/Petsmart for our dog and cat, both locations would be relatively close to where you'll be http://www.banfield.com/veterinarians/nc/raleigh/rahhttp://www.banfield.com/veterinarians/nc/durham/spx

For when dog owners can't get to a vet: https://www.petsbest.com/blog/how-to-make-your-dog-vomit/ We've had to do it before (under advise from a family friend who is a retired vet) and it worked fine without much trouble. Edit: Hadn't seen the other post saying the same. I'll leave this up for the link.

I know this is a late response, but this might help someone in the future. If you need to make a dog vomit, force feed them some hydrogen peroxide and then shake their stomach a bit. Our vet recommended this when our dogs got into chocolate.

Many thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Brooke Buchanan, I would also love the name of your vet. Mr. Miles is 14, so I know his days are limited, but after making the amazing rebound from the ICU, I'm hoping preventative care will help him live a few more years. He's my best friend.
