I thought K State was supposed to be renowned for their veterinary program, is the really no vet there that can do this? I volunteer at Wayside Waifs and they send dogs to Blue Pearl in Overland Park for specialty surgery and consults so that may be a place to check.

Dr. deMarco, formerly at Blue Springs Animal Hospital, performed surgery on both the right and left CCLs on my dog. He recently left BSAH and opened his own practice in Lee's Summit called GoodVets. I couldn't recommend him highly enough.
troubleswithterriers replied:
I haven’t had any particular experience with orthopedics, but I repeatedly took my dog in for emergencies/high level consults with blue pearl and got no satisfactory answers. One trip to mission veterinary and I got a solid diagnosis, a plan, and much better follow up care coordination. They also were pretty reasonable for a large veterinary center. Alternatively, several vets from mission left and purchased Family Pet Hospital in Shawnee and may be another viable/less expensive option. I’m not sure exactly what their capabilities are there though, they were doing a mass amount of updates to everything last time I was there though.
jaymless replied:
I've heard great things about Blue Springs Animal Hospital in regards to stuff like this. Might be worth a call to talk to them.
crimsonkate replied:
I think some of the negative reviews stem from the fact it is an emergency vet. Usually people take their beloved pet there in emergency situations and are highly emotional. I've been there a number of times with my pets. Typically I've went in with my pet and walked out without them (old age related problems). This can make for emotional reviews. If your vet recommended them, I would contact Mission Med Vet for a consultation. I've had absolutely no problems with them.
OogWoog replied:
For what it’s worth, my sister lives in Mission and took her dog all the way to K-State for all of its surgeries. Her Boston terrier had two dental surgeries, an orthopedic issue with its leg (I don’t remember if it was the knee), and several rounds of some sort of cancerous tumor removal. She now takes her other dogs all the way there for all their bi-annual appointments. She started with Mission Vet Clinic but did not feel that they ever thoroughly assessed the problem or offered good explanations to her on her dog’s (many) issues.

I'd give Blue Springs Animal Hospital a call - 25 mins east of KC. Our guy just had two salivary glands removed a month ago and everything went fantastic. Not harping on Mission as they came highly recommended from our vet as well - but they were over 2 x the cost.
angus_the_red replied:
Our dog had surgery at the Mission pet hospital about 10 years ago. We had a consultation and they explained the surgery options to us. If I recall correctly, we did go with TPLO. He's a large active dog (well he was, he's 14 now) and he's never had any trouble with it or the other leg. We were fanatical about limiting him during recovery and changed his diet to help keep him slim afterwards. It was expensive, but I've never regretted it. A lot can change in 10 years though, so take this review with a grain of salt.
truthfrommyredlips replied:
I can't recommend a location near you, as I'm on the Eastern Missouri side. But my dog had to have this surgery on both knees, about a year and a half apart. It's a pretty invasive procedure and takes a lot of healing. I wish you and your dog well in the recovery process!
