anyone know where to get some good deals on mountain bikes? I've sucked all the life i can out of my 2002 Jamis
Dan G. replied:
If you have a specific bike you're looking for, and you know what questions to ask, I've always been able to find a steal on Ebay in the wintertime. Got 3 great deals on hardly used bikes for uber-cheap. Just don't get price gouged on the shipping and make sure it's packed at a bike shop. Also, most LBS will make you a great deal on a new bike in the off season. Rob Garrison@Garrison's has always cut me a good deal on Niner, Salsa, or Santa Cruz this time of year.

I use Riverside Cycles and they've been great to work with.

I'll second Riverside. See John Flynn.
SJU_W4r_H4wk replied:
Bunch of Manayunk/Roxborough locals here I guess...that being said, I'll third Riverside Cycles. The vast majority of their work is cruiser style bikes, but they were nice enough to work on my KTM as well. Great guys all around honestly.
Mytos replied:
if you dont want to do the work yourself hit up riverside, they do great work for a very good price and great quality.
arcane_lizard replied:
Spare Parts is pretty amazing, but it is pricey and they often have a backlog. Having said that, I cannot think of anyone better than Roland to work on my bike.
Sitting_Man replied:
I like Riverside Cycles as well. For older or vintage bikes (esp. Brit or Italian), Quaker City Motor Works in Glenside (215.858.7269) is particularly good. Kenric at QCMW has also done good work on my old Honda.

Anyone know of a place in the neighborhood for used bikes for kids? I vaguely remember someone mentioning a bike repair shop and I wonder if they also sell bike too....
Karen S. replied:
Neighborhood Bike Works is not in our neighborhood, but this is what they do. They are in N. Phila and West Philadelphia. They teach kids to repair bikes, sell used bikes, do repair work and kids can work to earn a bike.
Alison W. replied:
PHEW! - Philly Electric Wheels is fantastic. I got a great deal on a used bike for my kiddo, and they even installed a kickstand, bell, and basket, too.

There is a great biking tour of urban farms in the area, including Weaver's Way Farm at Awbury Arboretum. Not sure when it happens but you can google it to find out.

I mostly see cyclists at 9-5 business commuting hours. I see bikers on Greene St a lot in particular. I'm not sure what kind of bike lanes might be planned. We should check with the Philadelphia City Planning Commission! Our new community planner rep is Ian Hegarty and he's very accessible by email for questions: ian.hegarty@phila.gov

I think most local shops would do it. Brewerytown Bikes or Breakaway are my recommendations.

Philadelphia Bikesmith would be my choice. I have never had a bike assembled by them, but I have used them to ship a bike across country (i.e disassembly and boxing), and everything got where it needed to be safe and sound. They also did a few major repairs and tune-ups for me that worked out great.

Hey fellow Philly cyclist! We're lucky to have a fairly bike-friendly city with an ever-growing bicycle infrastructure. Since we're also lucky to live in a fairly flat city, you can get away with a single speed bike, but something with gears would be more desirable if you intend to venture out of town. Hybrids/cruisers and even some more relaxed-geometry road bikes work great for a new cyclist who's looking to get around town for commuting and get some exercise in as well.
My personal favorite shop is [Bicycle Revolutions](https://plus.google.com/104848361231426376538/about?gl=us&hl=en) on 4th and Fitzwater (just south of South St). The staff here is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and you'd easily be able to get something to cruise around town in the $400 range, and they'd be able to outfit you with a helmet/bag/etc. There are a bunch of great shops around town, including Trophy bikes (one in university city and one in northern liberties), Bicycle Thearpy (i think near 22nd and south), Breakaway Bikes (in center city), Via bicycles (9th and south), firehouse bikes (West philly at 50th and baltimore), bicycle stable (frankford ave and master st in the northeast) and a bunch more.
As far as rides, the Schuylkill river trail is a great ride and very accessible. You can actually bypass most of downtown manayunk (and the hills west of manayunk) by taking the recently renovated gravel tow-path on the river. Theres a bunch of great loops through fairmount park, as well as the delaware river path, and if you want to explore some gravel, forbidden drive in the wissahickon goes all the way out to chestnut hill.
Hope this helps, and ride safe!

Do we have a lot of Philly cyclists? We should arrange a fun run sometime soon!

As Garr1 s0 n mentioned, Bicycle Revolutions would be your best bet for finding something in that price range. If you do decide to go with a road bike, and can maybe save up a little more money head to [Bicycle Therapy](http://www.bicycletherapy.com) at 22 nd and South. The shop has a boutique feel without the elitist attitude you would expect. They've been my go-to shop for almost 7 years now. As far as routes go, I ride about 100 mi a week on the SRT by myself. It's a great trail and is only getting better. There are group rides almost every day of the week that take off from the Art Museum.

Human Zoom in Ardmore didn't impress me. I really like Tailwinds up in Schwenksville. Worth the drive. Also Loweriders in Downingtown is a good friendly shop.

Let's all do the pretzel ride! Seriously though, Philly's bicycle infrastructure is getting more awesome by the minute. With the addition and improvement of existing bike lanes in the city and trails like the SRT that are being branched out way way into the suburbs. As garr1 s0 n has mentioned we luckily live in really flat city (I ride a fixed with a 48:14 gear ratio with no problems) so almost anything you choose will work well. Bicycle Revolutions is also a great shop, very friendly and helpful staff!

If you're okay with leaving the immediate area, I'd suggest heading up the blue route to the Lansdale exit and hitting up Indian Valley Bikeworks in Harleysville. If they're anything like they were when I worked there from 1999 to 2001, they're worth the trip.

Cycle Fit in Swarthmore!! They're great people. They'll get you on the right bike for the money you want to spend I've bought 3 bikes from them so far. Wonderful experience each time.
