I've had a couple of logos made on 99 designs.com. You pay x amount and then designers submit their versions of your designs. Similar to the freelancer idea I think. It's worked out well for me.

LS Jewelers told my daughter they wanted $300.00 to straighten a prong on her engagement ring. (My husband had dealt with them for years, also, spent a lot of money there). I'll not go back to them ever again. There is a shop in Wexford that didn't opt to rip her off, Grafner Brothers : http://www.grafnerbrothers.com/
Any interesting places to buy a wedding ring in Pittsburgh? Anybody know of some neat places to buy an engagement ring in or around Pittsburgh? Trying to avoid places...
trishypohta replied:
A good friend of mine got a really beautiful, antique engagement ring from her betrothed at the [The Marlene Harris Collection](http://www.marleneharriscol.com/). I would definitely check there because it's close to Pittsburgh (in Blawnox/Aspinwall area), and I have only heard really good things about them. It seems as though their website has pictures of all the rings too, so maybe you can get a few ideas and go in knowing which ones you want to see. Best of luck!
Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I'm pretty sure they will swap out diamonds in the rings. So, let's say you see a ring that is $3000 that you really like, they could swap out a less expensive diamond to put in, and it could really knock down the price.
MaryOutside replied:
My husband went to Wax on Ellsworth Ave. The craftsman there is happy to help you design something that actually holds specific meaning, rather than that industry-driven "throw rocks at girls" kind of diamond boring-ness. My ring has Greek marble, a dinosaur bone, and a meteorite in it. The settings are keystones, and there are subtle greek columns on the band. Beat. That. I didn't pay for it, but I am 99% sure that it's in or under your price range. edit: price

Second* listen to Greentea (above) ... Head down to The Clark Building at 717 Liberty Ave. downtown. There are at least 3-4 different mid-sized jewelry stores in there. Most will work with the price range you give them, or at least give you a sense of what's available at what price.
dhv1258 replied:
If you can't make it to the Clark building, Just go to Orr's in squirrel hill.. They have the same suppliers, as diamonds are a monopoly. They're only worth something because the supply is controlled.

This isn't a perfect answer to your question, but I'm recently engaged and my ring came from [Images Jewelers](http://www.imagesjewelers.com/) in Elkhart, Indiana. You can absolutely do orders strictly online, but it's not that awful of a drive if you want to go in and see things firsthand. My ring is an entirely custom piece, made specifically for me, and it was about $1,400. It's white gold with a 3/4 carat black diamond. Obviously, price varies depending upon your metal and stone choices, but I think they're very fairly priced considering you can get an absolutely one of a kind piece. My dude was thoroughly involved in the design process. He explained what he wanted, they did CAD drawings and emailed them to him for his approval, and showed him the wax molds and everything. He lives in Chicago, so he's closer to Elkhart than we are in Pittsburgh, so he drove in and they gave him a tour of their whole facility. He said they were awesomely nice and knowledgeable.

You can save a lot by going to Pawn/Resale shops. Try South Side Jewelers and More on East Carson.

Have you tried Goldstock downtown in the Clark Building? I got my wedding ring there (not an engagement ring). They seem to be priced pretty low.

I bought my wife's engagement ring and our wedding rings at [Gigliotti Jewelers](http://northhills.patch.com/listings/gigliotti-jewelers) in the north hills. The owner (Barry) is really knowledgeable and didn't pressure us into anything. It was also refreshing to talk to a real jeweler who understandings goldsmithing and gemstones, and not some overly-dressed salesperson jerk-bag.
greentea1985 replied:
Downtown there is the Clark Building. It's filled with jewelers that would be happy to help you find an engagement ring. My husband and I bought our wedding bands from two different jewelers there.

The Clark Building is the way to go seriously. Basically on one or 2 floors their are about 30 diamond places. When I bought my engagement ring someone told me about the clark building and I didnt know shit about diamonds. So on a whim I went in and started looking around. Over the next few hours I learned a TON first off. Once I kinda knew what I was looking for as far as the "5 C's" (youll soon learn my son) I did what I now call my greatest accomplishment. haha I went to one of the diamond stores and told them to show me the best diamond they had for the price I was willing to spend. Once they did I asked them to write it on the back of their business card. I then proceeded to walk 2 feet across the room to the next diamond dealer. Said hey, this is the deal that guy is offering me. Can you beat it? And I did this to EVERY SINGLE STORE(i even went to the same one a few times to let them beat their own prices). At the end of the day. I took the winning diamond around for one single round. And I had gotten SUCH a good deal the other stores said "if you can get THAT diamond at THAT price BUY IT TODAY!" And I did.. and it was glorious! One of the most fun times I ever had spending 2 months salary hahaha

I used [David Helfer's Jewelry](https://plus.google.com/101175843284872037509/about?gl=us&hl=en) after getting a recommendation here. I got the world's cheapest wedding ring, custom made from some copper pipe we tore out of our house and a bit of silver. Very happy with the decision, and the jewelers there are super interested in doing out-of-the-ordinary work.

Inquiring about a reputable jeweler and watchmaker... My grandmother passed away recently and my family has inherited all of her old jewelery. Included in that jewelery...
PghLawyer replied:
PM me some photos of the watches, front and back, and I can try to provide you with some guidance on whether they are sought after models. Opening the cases isn’t difficult in most circumstances. Removing the movement can be a pain sometimes, but that should not be necessary just to get an appraisal on the value. The key with pocket watches is whether you have a “railroad” grade model. After that, it comes down to case material with could be gold plated, coin silver, sterling silver, 10kt or 14kt gold. Most times the case has a different number than the movement (the system that makes the watch tick). Also, if you’re getting items appraised, be sure to inform the appraiser if you are looking for insurance/replacement value or arms-length resale value (distinguished from high-retail value, I.e. what you would pay from a specialized dealer of that type of good). I can’t recommend an appraiser that I trust. I am sorry for your loss and I wish you good luck!

There are two antique stores (that I know of) that you would like. I forget their names but one is on east Carson street about a block away from the BP/10 th street bridge intersection. The other one is on 5 th Ave downtown across from console and right beside pizza milano. I have been in both. The one downtown has a lot of antique knives and swords right when you walk in.
