Psychiatrists in Pittsburgh, PA

I wish the mods would make a sticky because these questions get asked on here a lot. I was in a similar situation last year. I had recently moved here and needed medication prescriptions. One thing I was running into was that many psychiatrists would not see me because I didn't also have a therapist at the time. Calling my insurance was somewhat helpful in that the person I spoke to went through and gave me specific phone numbers for people who were taking patients. Unfortunately most of them were still not taking patients though, or wouldn't see me because I didn't yet have a therapist. I ended up going back to my PCP, who got me to a UPMC social worker, who got me to a UPMC psychiatrist in the UPMC general internal medicine practice. She was able to get my medicine rxes sorted out, helped me to find a therapist (whose practice also has a psychiatrist) and saw me for a couple of months. All of this is to say, at what is probably not a great time in your life, you will have to push the PCP harder. If they are part of a larger (read UPMC) practice, there are social workers that can help with this sort of thing. Even with hindsight, if I had to do it again I'm not sure what else I would do.

Hey if you're on meds from a psych and you're in the process of finding a new one and are running the risk of running out of meds that you need take your scripts to a pcp and explain the situation and ask them to write you a script continuing what you're on. Most docs are willing to do that if you ask. Even if you can't find a psych right away don't stop your meds. If a doc says no then find a new pcp. A good pcp will help you til you find a new psych. If they won't then go to someone else. Good luck bud

Easiest to check with your insursnce provider or your Primary Care Physician.

I like Dr. Frye at Vista Behavioral Health. They have a few offices around the area.
