Looking for a reputable used car dealership in PDX metro? A drunk driver totaled my parked car! Ugh. Luckily no one was hurt, including the idiot driver. Well, now I've...

Suggesstion: I didn't really pay attention to the dealership as much as I focused on the make/model of the car I wanted. Once I was certain on the car that I wanted, I used [True Car](http://www.truecar.com/) and got a bid from three different dealerships. As expected, the car that I specifically asked for didn't come up and they tried to offer something else or give me an excuse that the price wasn't reasonable. Eventually I found a reasonable substitution at a reasonable price. The important thing is I didn't just randomly show up at a dealership and test drive a bunch of cars and then get the hard-sell sales pitch thrown at me. Instead, I had a pre-negotiated price for a specific vehicle in writing with which I showed to the sales person when I arrived at the dealership. I was in and out of there in about an hour.

I had an excellent experience with Ron Tonkin in Gresham. I have had really good experiences with Freeman motor company. They might be a little out of your price range but they usually have a few priced around 7k. Very different atmosphere from any other used car dealership I have visited in that there was not a group of salespeople leering at me like vultures when I drove up on the lot. They are located in a funny little shop tucked away on macadam by the sellwood bridge, definitely worth a visit.
That said, I would advise avoiding dealerships altogether and going the craigslist route. If you are patient and a little bit flexible with your needs, there are some amazing deals on craigslist that you would never find at any used car dealership.

Look into buying a bike and using public transportation. Save yourself a ton of money. F*ck drunk drivers, I'm sorry that happened to you

There are, but they are so few and far between, and fall to the dark side quickly. The only consistently good place to buy a used car in PDX is good ol CL

Just info really, Dick Hannah now owns all the VW dealerships in the area, so if that's what you end up looking at you pretty much have to deal with them. Some people that work there are scummy as hell, but in my experience, they have good cars and good techs.

I'd strongly suggest staying away from a dealership. You're paying a premium for no real reason. Do a private sale and get the car checked out by an independent mechanic. I used to work for a car dealership and will never buy from a dealer, ever.

Like you, my car was recently totalled by another driver, a felon on meth it turns out, but anyways...I've been used car shopping the last two weeks as well. My budget was $10-12k and 4-6 years old. This is the range where you can't find anything at a reputable dealer (too old) or craigslist (too new). This leaves you with the shady used car dealers on 82nd avenue and the like. Sketchy!
I have cash for a portion of the purchase and will be financing the rest through my credit union. Any car 2004 and newer is eligable for a loan from OnPoint, for example, so this fit my needs.
While the pickin's were slim on CL, I ended up finding just the car I wanted. I should be closing the deal tomorrow. The problem is that people tend to hold on to good used cars but if you get lucky, someone is moving or their family has grown/shrunk and they need a different vehicle to meet their needs. This was the case for me.
So my advice is to shop CL. You get the full maintenance history and you'll pay less than a used dealer and won't have to deal with shady dealers.
Another thing I've noticed recently, sellers on CL are getting hassled more and more from spammers, scammers, and flakes. They find it refreshing to talk to a nice human buyer. They may be motivated to work with you quickly and at a good price if you are a reasonable friendly human being.

My friends highly recommend Powell Motors (I think it's on Grand). They haven't had any trouble with their car and even took another friend to get her car from there. Apparently he doesn't pressure sell and if you do have trouble, they people he recommends aren't shady.

An anti-recommendation... I would suggest staying far away from Carr.

I've had great experiences with [Berg Car Company](http://www.bergcarcompany.com/) over on Canyon. A lot depends on their inventory, but they're solid and I've never felt ripped off.

Berg on canyon went smoothly for me. Had the elemonators guy come out and check the car first and he mentioned that they are hit and miss due to being high volume and missing things from time to time.
