Brian Baker is giving you great info here -- we went to Paley instead of Sankar in Philly or Boston Children's because only he and Standard are doing early intervention without cutting the hip bones. Google "Perthes for Parents Paley" and you will understand the difference in approach. He has a 90+% success rate with the ex fixator.
Yvonne P. replied:
There are a lot of GREAT doctors. There are none that specialize in Perthes only. Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Texas is doing an in depth study (International LCPD Study Group) Dr. Herring, who's standards all treatment is base on is the department head at this hospital. ALL the doctors above measure their success on Herring's standards.

If you really want to travel, come to New Zealand! Our specialist Mr Ian Galley is amazing! He is highly experienced in not only paediatric orthopaedics, but also general orthopaedics. He is my daughters surgeon and has seen her through pelvic osteotomies and her external fixator, he has seen my son through the end of his perthes and also did the initial consultations for an ankle injury, that had to be referred to his colleague who specialised in laproscopic repairs to the ankles and feet, and he also did my hip replacement due to perthes damage. He also looks after a friend and her husband - the husband has had some extensive hand surgery and my friend had a knee replacement and is coming up for shoulder surgery - all in his more than capable hands!
Dani H. replied:
Richard Henderson UNC ortho in chapel hill, nc. I cannot say enough amazing things about Dr Henderson. My son was diagnosed at 8, Femoral osteotomy performed... He is now 16 and has played baseball, lacrosse and even wrestled. He has virtually no limb discrepancy and his femoral head is perfectly reformed. To look at his X-rays you would never know he had perthes. Good luck!
Erin M. replied:
We have been very happy with Dr Tamai at Cincinnati Children's.
Brian B. replied:
I ran a perthes group. the top 3 doctors treating kids with perthes are these. In Baltimore are, Dr. Standard at Sinai, Dr Dror Paley who also has a facebook page in West Palms spring Fl. Dr Shoenecker with Shriners in St Louis. The first two specialize using the external fixator, hip drilling and stem cell implantation. They use the goal of avoiding bone cutting surgeries to preserve the original hip shape. The Shoenecker is at Shiners in St Louis. No cost to patients. Also uses treatment to prevent bone changing surgeries. The whole object of using these types of procedures leaves open other treatments later if needed. Not to pick fights with other doctor choices, many of the doctors out there still rely on procedures used to treat hip dysplasia such as femoral osteotomies which has shown to be less effective long term in older kids. Many who go threw the osteotomy route still have hip deformities later despite being allowed to be more active sooner. nearly 85% of kids going threw the osteotomy route need additional surgery and all go threw hardware removal surgery.
Nancy D. replied:
Don't know if there are 2 Dr. Shoeneckers but I my son has a friend here in TN ( both boys have Perthes) and his DR is Shoenecker out of Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital in Nashville. He has done an amazing job with my sons friend.

Kimberly M. replied:
My son had dr Eric Gordon He works with dr shoenecker. Love him. My son has no pain at all. They both work out of st Louis children's hospital in St. Louis. And Shriners and the baptist hospital in st Louis. Dr Gordon is letting my son decide when or if the metal has to be taken out. It's all based on pAin. But my son didn't play sports once he was on his crutches.
Nydia T. replied:
Dr Shawn standard in Baltimore md is the best. Love him and only treats kids with perthes and limb lengthening for congenital defects.
Māra M. replied:

Dr standard if ur in east coast. Dr Nelson at Loma Linda if ur west coast. Both amazing.
Heather W. replied:
Dr. Matheney at Children's Hospital in Boston. 1 (617) 355-6021/ they will want to see all medical records & X-rays before you make the trip. The team of doctors want to make sure they are able to help your child before you make a appointment. Our son is in his 4 th year of Perthes.
Donna B. replied:
your daughters age is most definitely on her side and I would be inclined to make use of email consultations before you commit to travelling anywhere for treatment, as it might well be that she will be a on a 'wait and see' approach regardless of who you see. I totally understand that you want the best person in perthes to care for your daughter - we all want that - but to be realistic, 80% of kids diagnosed with perthes need no intervention at all. Of the other 20%, this is mostly the older diagnosis kids (over 8 years of age) and although there are younger diagnosis kids represented in this figure, they are the minority. Top specialists are as mentioned - Dr Standard in Baltimore and Dr Paley in Florida and Dr Lopes in Portugal, all of whom do email consultations. Then there is Dr Kim and Dr Herring, both of whom I think are at Scottish Rite Hospital - one of the classifications for perthes is the Herring Classification, named after that specialist.

Mr Simon Thomas ( we call all our consultants Mr). Bristol Children's hospital. He is a leader in the field of Perthes & lectures on it. Picked his name off the internet & was so lucky as he has changed our boys life. He got Perthes at 11. He's nearly 13 & walks really well with only a small amount of pain if he over does it. Sorry that we are so far away.

Dr. Standard in Baltimore Maryland and dr. Paley in west palm beach Florida are two who treat this daily. We traveled from Oregon to Maryland to be treated by dr. Standard. They both will consult for free via internet/email and dr. S also holds. On they chats on line for perthes. Let me know if you need contact info. Best of luck.

Dr. Paley
Shari B. replied:
I would recommend Dr standard or paley. I took my daughter from new mexico to Baltimore and it was the best decision I ever made. Dr Standard was so good about talking to us online in his chats and we take xrays here in new Mexico and send them to him to get his opinion. I know she wouldn't be doing near as good if we didn't make that move.

Dr. Walter Stanwood at Plymouth Bay Ortho. Did both my shoulders fantastic.

I love Zibilsky in Duxbury, was there this afternoon. Dr Marks, Plymouth, is a kind, compassionate man. I take my Dad to him for Alzheimer's, my most important requirement for anyone dealing with my dad is that he is treated with respect, maintaining his dignity, that he deserves. Dr Marks always does. Tried several treatments, then we hit on one that worked. Has plenty of advice for the family, and he is easy to talk to!
