I know that the Clubhouse on Baltimore downtown has a 6-lane lap pool. The building itself is used for big party rentals on the bottom 4 floors, and the top 8 or so are lofts and apartments. I'm not positive if it is strictly for tenants or not, but I worked there for a year without seeing anybody as much as touch the water. The staff is friendly and might be willing to work a deal with you for a membership. Who knows, could be worth a shot! www.theclubhouseonbaltimore.com you may want to try the apartments number..Not sure if different. www.clubhouselofts.com

Depending on where you work or go to school, 24 hour fitness might be a good option. Costco sells a 2 year membership for $350. The nearest 24 hour to Hyde Park is around 85 th and Ward Parkway. Not terribly far, maybe 6 miles or so, but a bit of a PITA to get to around 5 pm.

UMKC is your closest option and yes you can go there without being a student or faculty member. You can pay a small "university association fee" or somesuch - I think it was $30 - and get a membership there. I used to swim laps there probably 10 years ago now and the pool was nice - and at $40 a month, it's hard to beat the price. I always felt like parking and traffic around UMKC weren't great.
I almost signed up there again when I got back in the pool this fall, so I did give them a call and remember them saying you do have to visit in person to sign up and the offices are open on a Monday - Friday 8-5 sort of deal. I ended up signing up at Prairie Life Center down at 103rd & Metcalf in Overland Park. It's not close to home, but the pool is decent, it's really close to where I work, I can get in and out on my way home from work, and they always have dedicated lap lanes.

Wow, you've got a lot of distance between those places. Just thought you should be aware that it could be more than an hour drive to some of those places. Sorry I can't help more, I live in Stanley.

The city community centers don't charge membership fees. In fact, you can pay per visit or month at a time. I've used Tony Aguirre Center, Gregg Klice, and I went to the one on 63 rd and Swope once when it opened. Your tax dollars are already paying for those so check them out. Currently have a 10 visit punch card to swim at Research Med Center. I think there are also facilities at UMKC?
