Nothing wrong with Blue Buffalo. Follow the money, Purina and Hill's don't like the competition. Long article but worth it. :) http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-07-24/blue-buffalo-vs-dot-purina-in-dog-food-fight-over-nutrition-claims#p1

Dog Food Advisor is a great site to check out the quality of different foods. We feed Acana -- check out the Singles (single protein) as a possible option. FYI, Acana is usually only available at better pet stores...not at the big chains. We order it to be delivered from PetFlow. http://www.acana.com/products/singles/

In my experience most vets talk rubbish and are only out to make money. They told me to have my westie put to sleep years ago as there was nothing they could do. Changed vets and dog food orijen has changed her life no more steroids or other drugs they pumped her full of. Sorry I am so pushy about this but this changed my dogs life. And Acana is full of fillers

Clark vet is great, they were super nice to us when we took our cats there. But avoid the Kingsdale animal Hospital (near the highway) at all costs. They are cold, heartless and just in it for the money. Look up reviews online as well.

Mitchell Animal Hospital has always been my go-to vet.

We go to St. Francis and they've been awesome for us. Our 11 month old golden mix actually LOVES going to the vet, he gets excited to even pick up his heartworm medication. Don't think they do boarding though. As a side-note, if you're looking for a daycare, and I highly recommend you do for socialization, Wag and Train are incredible. Our little guy goes once a week and has since he was old enough to go. The first time we took him it's like he learned bite-inhibition overnight.

Hey! So I have worked with Emergency and regular vets for years and currently run a dog grooming shop. When I moved to the area from Toronto, I tried the Highland vet because they were close by and was not at all impressed with them.
Last summer my dog was bitten first thing on a Sunday AM and other than the vet emergency hospital, the only vet open and would fit my dog in was Waterloo West Animal Hospital. They were sooo good with my little pup and she healed beautifully.
They recently did a dental surgery on the same dog and corrected her cherry eye (which 2 other vets did surgery on unsuccessfully, and a referral vet opthamologist said would never be corrected).
The staff and vets are great! They educate and advocate for your pet without being pushy and trying to upsell. Their hours are the unbeatable. Prices are reasonable. Also, they see exotic pets which I recently found out and am thrilled about!
If you're interested in finding out about pricing, ask for a printed quote on a spay/neuter and see how they price things. They're not allowed to post prices online or at the hospital so it's easy to mask how their pricing works, if they want to.
Some places will have lower appointment fees but very high fees for things like vaccines and bloodwork. Some places will have a cheap spay but not tell you that what you're sacrificing to get a cheap (often pain management meds!). With a printed quote you can see how they price things and a glimpse into how they operate.
Good luck with your puppy!

Strasburg Animal Hospital. Dr. Ravi Walia! I was recommended to him after years of being over charged at different places. He's super busy, and a really wonderful guy. Prices are 10 x better than anywhere else. This guy just really cares about his animals.

On Victoria st we love Breslau vets. Really nice and coordinated office and sleek. When my old, messed up dog needed care, I really got great help from Manitou vet by Country Boy /Fairview mall. They are still my favourite for humble, honest, practical advice. The bills were very much less than other vets. When we had to choose between surgery and end of life options, they are good.

Myself and some neibors agree we have had negative experiences at Pandora/ Charles. The bad interactions were 4-10 years ago. The older lady/owner vet may have retired by now. Her staff was never part of our complaints.

Cambridge Animal Hospital on 24. Excellent hours, great with my pets, good prices and will be honest about what is optional vs. mandatory for your pet (as opposed to other predatory vets trying to force you to do non-essential tests or too frequently administer the rabies vaccine). All those that I know that've switched to them have been much happier than their prior vet.

I've had a pretty good experience with manitou animal hospital.
Prices are average and they are always flexible with my work schedule. When my dog was having reoccurring bladder infections they made everything quick and easy. After the first initial infection they did and exam, urinalysis and then prescribed meds. When we realized she was prone to infections they let me skip the exam portion to save some $ and just asked me to bring in a urine sample and then pick up meds from then on. I didn't even need to bring my dog in. It saved me a lot of time and $.
They also seem to be really caring to the animals. They always call a day or two after the appointment to see how your pet it doing.

Clark Animal Hospital (Alpine just off Ottawa, so probably not close if you're near Weber). We took our last dog there when she was about 10 and having a seisure and our previous vets said not to bring her there. The folks there were amazing and ended up helping us get an extra 4 years. Our current dog is just over a year now and they've been amazing through her puppyhood.

I used to take my cat to Mitchell Animal Hospital when I lived near them. We switched to Beechmount Animal Hospital after her dog and my cat had to be unexpectedly put to sleep within a few months of each other, and then we got new kittens and eventually another dog. The switch was mainly for walkability for me since I do not drive. Both places are friendly, helpful, top-notch vets that explain everything to you, including your options when things are critical. In terms of cost, Beechmount seems a little less expensive than Mitchell, but few pet medical expenses are cheap. Mitchell were very understanding when I had to make the rather unexpected decision about my cat, saying I could go for extra testing if I wished but also saying they did not feel it would make any difference.

Not to be a jerk; but you want the best vet at a reasonable price, that also gives student discounts... Pets are not inexpensive, if you cannot afford them then please (this is to anyone) DO NOT have one. You'd be surprised how many people are doing online fundraising because they can't afford $1,000 vet bill, it's quite sad for these pets. ... aside from that, my cats go to Waterloo West Animal Hospital (Erb/Fischer-Hallman) and I'm very happy with the staff and vets. They've got good hours and after hour services. Both of my cats have had UTI's and blockage, one of them had bladder stones and required about $1,200 in surgery but they did a great job getting him back to good health.
