Griffith Observatory is always a nice spot to stop in on your way to Hollywood. Weather permitting of course, but taking the train China Town, Little Tokyo or walking around downtown. You can go in city hall and go up to the top floor (think its the 27th floor) there is an observation deck, the whole building has great architecture. You can also go East an hour and go to Palm Springs, take the aerial tram up to the top of the San Jacinto Mountains or go wine tasting in Temecula.
