What you're looking for sounds like electroacupuncture --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroacupuncture I'm an engineer, so I believe in good science. I don't believe in the "chi" of acupuncture and the traditional chinese medicine theories, however, I've had a lot of different therapists and modalities done on me and acupuncture was by far one of the most effective, and it definitely wasn't placebo. I've had about a half dozen acupuncturists work on me and only 2 I found effective, so it just might be finding the right one. I've had electroacupuncture done many times. I'm not sure if it was more effective than the tradditional I've had, but I trusted my acupuncturist when she did it on me some times (sorry, she's in a different city). She believed in eastern medicine/acupuncture/chi but was trianed in both western and traditional eastern. For myself, I've seen that acupuncture has been able to signifigantly reduce inflammation from acute injuries (I hurt myself a lot). I usually feel results form 1 treatment, and within 3 treatments the accute injury/inflammation had dropped signifigantly. Many times I would walk out of her office signifigantly better than when I walked in, and that was very rare with any other rehab/therapist I've seen (physio, chiro, massage, osteo). My personal belief, and is shared with many of my favorite trainers/therapists, is that it's 80/20 rule to getting better --> 80% is the effort you put in at home (ie. doing exercises or stretches) and 20% the work they perform on you (ie. adjustments, acupuncture, massage, etc). When I think of a "deeper" form of acupuncture, I actually think of IMS, which is usually done by a physio. Basically they jab the needle deep into your muscles to get them to twitch and release. It sucks. It's like a deep tissue massage on steroids. EDIT: the one thing I have *some* belief in for the chinese acupuncture theory of "mirroring", to the extent that a lot of times symptom location isn't where the problem is. I remember I went to my acupuncturist after I jacked up both my hip flexors bad playing football. I could barely walk. She put needles in my ass (not my hip flexors) and I walked out signifigantly better than I walked in. I mean night and day.
