Alicia A. replied:
In line with what Karine says, you can have a doula for emotional support and non-medicinal comfort measures during labour. Some doulas do prenatal or post-partum support as well. DONA is a recognized certification, but you don't need to be certified to be a doula. Doulas are paid for privately. You can have a doula with a midwife or physician. For your comprehensive prenatal, delivery and post-partum care, you can chose a midwife, family doctor or OB/GYN. Midwives and family docs are specialists in normal low risk birth while OB/GYN are specialists in high risk pregnancy and complicated births. All are able to order the required tests and procedures that are part of the standard of care. Midwives provide you the option of birthing in the hospital, birth centre (Ottawa or Toronto only) or home. Family docs and OB/GYN work in hospital. You are more likely (but not guarenteed) to have your specific provider actually attend your birth, rather than one of their colleagues, if you have a midwife or family doc (varies depending on their call scheduled). OB/GYN tend to do deliveries within a call group and work for a 24h period attending any woman who arrives to the hospital during that time. Midwives and family docs consult with OB/GYN as required, and transfer care if things require more specialized skills. Midwives, Family Docs and OB/GYN are covered by the provincial insurance plan in Ontario, Quebec and BC.

If you are interested in a midwife, call early because they often have wait lists. You can find clinics near you here: http://www.ontariomidwives.ca/ If you are looking for a family doctor, I can vouch for the team at Lancaster Medical Clinic and the Rideau Family Health Team. Dr Jessica Strike, Dr Kathleen Kelly, Dr Gail Webber and Dr Meera Chopra are all excellent professionals and work out of the General.

I'm a huge fan of Susan Nolan from https://birthcarecanada.wordpress.com/. She is also an RN and was an amazing help when there was a sudden nurse shortage at the hospital and even got to be there through an eventual emergency c-section. Oh! And she is a lactation consultant. It's a fantastic help.

Good morning ladies. I'm looking for Obstetricians, Doulas, and Mid-wives who have their own practice in the Ottawa/east end of the city. Do you know any?

East Ottawa Midwives is what you want if you're looking for a midwife. Any of the OBs that practice at the Montfort would be a good option. As for doulas, I know a few that live in the East end, but almost all doulas will travel anywhere. National Capital Doulas is awesome (as Amie Scharfe O'Neill posted above) and I also recommend Victoria Kellett
