Alicia A. replied:
In line with what Karine says, you can have a doula for emotional support and non-medicinal comfort measures during labour. Some doulas do prenatal or post-partum support as well. DONA is a recognized certification, but you don't need to be certified to be a doula. Doulas are paid for privately. You can have a doula with a midwife or physician. For your comprehensive prenatal, delivery and post-partum care, you can chose a midwife, family doctor or OB/GYN. Midwives and family docs are specialists in normal low risk birth while OB/GYN are specialists in high risk pregnancy and complicated births. All are able to order the required tests and procedures that are part of the standard of care. Midwives provide you the option of birthing in the hospital, birth centre (Ottawa or Toronto only) or home. Family docs and OB/GYN work in hospital. You are more likely (but not guarenteed) to have your specific provider actually attend your birth, rather than one of their colleagues, if you have a midwife or family doc (varies depending on their call scheduled). OB/GYN tend to do deliveries within a call group and work for a 24h period attending any woman who arrives to the hospital during that time. Midwives and family docs consult with OB/GYN as required, and transfer care if things require more specialized skills. Midwives, Family Docs and OB/GYN are covered by the provincial insurance plan in Ontario, Quebec and BC.

If you are interested in a midwife, call early because they often have wait lists. You can find clinics near you here: http://www.ontariomidwives.ca/ If you are looking for a family doctor, I can vouch for the team at Lancaster Medical Clinic and the Rideau Family Health Team. Dr Jessica Strike, Dr Kathleen Kelly, Dr Gail Webber and Dr Meera Chopra are all excellent professionals and work out of the General.

I'm a huge fan of Susan Nolan from https://birthcarecanada.wordpress.com/. She is also an RN and was an amazing help when there was a sudden nurse shortage at the hospital and even got to be there through an eventual emergency c-section. Oh! And she is a lactation consultant. It's a fantastic help.

Looking for Ottawa midwife help and/or recommendations My partner and I have recently found out that I am pregnant, and have decided that a midwife is the route we would...

We went with the midwifery group of Ottawa based on Carling. They operate in teams so there is always at least a couple on call at all times. Your appointments will always be with your midwife or her backup. They try to be the at the delivery but it doesn't always happen. Our first baby decided to arrive on a particularly busy night so we had the backups backup and a student
For home deliveries they operate in pairs, one for mom and one for baby.
Two other friends have used them each for two deliveries with no complaints. Both home and hospital deliveries.
They have privileges at only a couple hospitals, Monfort and Queensway Carleton. And the new birthing centre that just opened.
I highly recommend calling ASAP

Check out the Midwifery Collective. Its on Olmstead, off Montreal road, and is amazing. http://www.midwiferycollective.com/midwives.html They are lovely, compassionate, and insanely organized lol. Plus, their building is gorgeous and very cozy (they bought and converted a house) Congrats, and good luck!

Here is a new option for women http://www.ottawabirthcentre.ca/ It's not home birth and it's not a hospital. It's a centre run by Midwives with Doulas. Just opened its doors at the beginning of February.

Hello, Congrats on the baby. We are expecting our first at the end of February and are currently benefitting from the services of the Vanier midwifery collective. We both have enjoyed and appreciated their guidance and expertise. I also STRONGLY suggest to look into the following course: BRINGING BABY HOME Good luck!

File this one under recommendations. If nothing else you my find some good info here: [Hayley Kew Doula](http://www.hayleykewdoula.ca/faqs/). Haley is a wonderful person, providing prenatal and postnatal support. Sorry I know nothing about the economics/OHIP of this kind of thing. FWIW, I am 11 years in, and I'm still overwhelmed. Take care.

OHIP pays for midwives, so you would be just better off to google midwives ottawa call the 1800# and find out what district you are in. We opted for the one that was in orleans due to our distric and they were fantastic. On that note our first was born in a hospital which was absolutely useless and a waste of resources, our 2 nd we had at home and it was way less stressfull to have her that way we had everything prepaired and planned. Something to look into.
Hi Ladies... Are there any midwives or Doulas in the group that can give me some advice or that I can speak to who can advocate on my behalf? I am 25+5 days pregnant and...

Thanks for the advice Jasmine. We still own property in Ontario so we're trying to decide whether to change our address or not.. It's a question of Quebec vs. Ontario now, or Maison de Naissance vs. The Ottawa Birthing Centre vs. Montfort it seems!
