Michelle Delves as Amy Patriotgirl says above check diet first which may include a nutritionist and allergists however migraines are universal and still perplexing. 2. Consider using form or physical medicine like a tens unit to reduce the muscle tightness in the neck/shoulder area as many migraines are associated with tension in the muscles which impedes the flow of blood out of brain and the increased pressure precipitates the onset of the migraines. I would tread lightly in overuse of medications due to the unexpected consequences of the med or of the intermixing of meds and the issues caused by that.

I also go to Carolina headache institute I see Dr Finkle ... Has been better after lots of trail & error ... (Tho with insurance changes I can no longer get the meds that were helping ) good luck & keep fighting back!!

Go see Dr. Suh at Supremia Dentistry. I have had chronic migraines for years. I took preventative meds, pain management and nausea medication. Turns out I have TMJ. You can have this for years with no symptoms until something causes it to get worst. Mine was Invisalign. He can find out if a problem with your teeth is causing your migraines. If you do need medication to prevent I recommend Topomax. It reduced my migraines to only 2 or less a month. I used Relpax to eliminate a migraine once I got one. But seriously check with Dr. Suh, this kind of thing is his specialty.
Abby H. replied:
Don't know a thing about the cause of your headaches, but I know that some migraines are related to stress, so if yours are, check out a book I've been reading, The Anxiety Cure by Dr. Archibald D. Hart. Hope you find some answers!
Katherine W. replied:
You really should see a chiropractor. Dr. Glen Peterson with Infinite Wellness in Knightdale suffered from severe migraines for about 20 years.... until he attended chiropractic college. He has not had a single migraine since he was adjusted! He gives free consults and you really should hear his own personal story re migraines. His contact info: 919-217-8188 and infin8 wellness.com. No matter what, I do hope you will seek some natural remedies via chiropractic care.
Beth G. replied:
I swear by acupuncture! I see David Peters in Cary and he is truly a lifesaver.

coming from someone who has suffered from migraines DAILY my entire life until almost 2 years ago, I have cut out ALL pork and I use Headache Relief from Plant Therapy for when I get any little bit of a headache or migraine. It is awesome that I rarely have migraines anymore! And for the record, I went to Raleigh Neurology and Duke Neurology in Raleigh and both of the doctors were psychos and they tried several medicines that didn't work. The guy at Duke (Dr. Davenport) prescribed me two medicines that I found out when I went to pick them up at the pharmacy had a 50% chance of being FATAL if taken together (as he prescribed). The lady at Raleigh Neuro (Dr. Gabr) told me I was crazy and a liar and swore that she saw me as a child and that I was lying about my symptoms (I had never been to her and I sure wasn't lying. She trapped me in the room and I was literally screaming for help.)

I had several migraines per month, lasting 3-4 days each. Started seeing Dr. Glenn at Raleigh Neuro (and later, her P.A., Jaya Reddy). Last year, I reduced my gluten drastically. Around the same time, Jaya told me to start taking 400-500 mcg daily of Magnesium and 400 mcg daily of Vit. B2. I have one migraine every 2-3 mos. now and have found a medicine combo (Etodolac and Maxalt) that stops it quickly if one is started. Not sure if it was the supplements, going low gluten, or both, but it has changed my life.
Tamara M. replied:
Dr. Patricia Naslund is my hubby's neurologist. My hubby has Complicated Migraine Syndrome. Dr. Naslund is great. She has CMS too, so understands. Hubby takes Topamax. We cant' afford the Maxalt melties.
Katie C. replied:
Raleigh Neurology has great reputation. I would also consider some more holistic treatments (chiropractor, acupuncture and massage). I know good folks in all those fields if interested.
Bob J. replied:
Michelle Delves the point brought out by Debbie Salisbury on rubbing Vicks on your temple is also supported by studies in the German and American Botanical Council. Vicks has menthol in it ( some form of mint oil like peppermint, spearmint) and also seems to be tied to release of vasoconstriction ( better blood flow). The kicker though is if you use peppermint, spearmint,( these are essential oils from plants, not synthetically made,), Vicks is to rub the oil so it is above eye level on your temples. Because essential oils are very volatile ( evaporate easily) the evaporation of the oil will be an irritant to the eyes and cause some burning ( nothing serious here just annoying).
Just a note off of Bob's post, the Headache Relief from Plant Therapy has peppermint oil in it as well as a few others. I do keep mine in a roller ball and rub it in to my forehead and headache.

Michelle Delves: one issue that has not been mentioned here is hormones. I suffered from migraines usually the two weeks before my period. I started really watching all issues (journal) such as diet, stress, etc. I started supplementing with all the B vitamins (which are heavily depleted in the menstrual cycle). This was life-changing for me. Also, some form of regular exercise helps, too. It does sound as if you have some stress levels to manage from your posts.

My son and I both have migraines. For him magnesium and riboflavin cut his migraines down from almost daily to 2 - 3 per month right away and now after going gluten and dairy free he has them 3 or 4 times per year. Mine are hormonally triggered as well as weather, allergies, glares etc. What has helped me most is going gluten free, trying to eliminate as much MSG as possible and avoiding all fried and processed foods. When I do get a migraine, I call my chiropractor/kinesiologist who has been kind enough to meet me at his office even after hours. He has been able to stop the migraine in its tracks each time. I highly recommend Dr Barry at Chiropractic Nutrition Clinic in Wake Forest. Praying you find relief soon!

Thus, the ketogenic diet may ultimately be useful in the treatment of a variety of neurological disorders."

I have had migraines for decades and as I got older they got worse (I am 49). I tried everything... even the Botox injections for migraines. Nothing worked. Raleigh Neurology just wanted to put me on drug after drug after drug. I finally got up the courage to try acupuncture. It had been suggested to me before but I was scared. I've been going for over a year now and migraines are so much better. They're down in severity and frequency by over 50%. I go to Timeless Acupuncture in Raleigh.

Jackie, I would try addressing deficiencies (magnesium, zinc, potassium, selenium, etc.), hormones, and other things that commonly cause migraines (nitrates, artificial sweeteners, MSG, GMO's, birth control, etc.) before anything else. I'd be happy to help. http://www.guidingyoutowellness.com/

My wife gets migraines frequently. We have learned over the years that she has many triggers. The main one being artificial sweeteners. Migraines can also be caused by misalignment of your body. Even if you see a neurologist, supplementing with chiropractic care will go a long way. My chiropractor is Hahn Family Chiropractic. There are a lot of neurologists in the area. My recommendation would be Duke neurology. I have been there and my wife is going there in a couple of weeks to make sure there is nothing more wrong with her head.

I have had migraines (mostly hormonal) for years. I am pregnant, so have had to stop all "effective" (I use that term loosely, nothing cures them) medications and have been searching for an answer. I started essential oils and they are not helping much. I am going to the neurologist soon to try and find a solution. A good friend of mine has had luck with occipital nerve blocks. http://www.medcentral.org/main/OccipitalNerveBlock.aspx

Valerie as you can see I have brain cancer. I will tell you I have had Chronic Migraines for 20 years. And migraines since I was 12. Horrible! Have you tried to give yourself a brain freeze when it's really bad? If not as bad as that hurts it also helps. Try to eat something very cold get a brain freeze and let me know your thoughts. As crazy as it sounds my brain surgeon told me to try it and it does help.

Valerie, I go to Raleigh Neuro for my migraines as well. Last Oct., I went on a low gluten diet. That same week, the P.A. I see there put me on 400 mcg of Vit. B2 and 400-500 mg of Magnesium daily. I went from having several migraines a month, lasting several days each, to about 1 every 2 months. Not sure if it was the low gluten diet, the supplements, or both, but it has changed my life. Good luck!
