Have you considered a vitamin regimen? My son was put on magnesium & b2 . Both prescribed vitamins not over the counter and he has significant reduction in the number of migraines . Diet pays a huge part as well. Reduce sugar, sodium, processed foods . He sometimes goes to a neurological chiropractor . Dr. Bill Shine in Greensburg from time to time for adjustments.
Lynn L. replied:
Kim, have you ever tried a chiropractor? My eldest daughter suffered from migraines for years. We were referred to Dr. Billot in Gbg. and it was like a miracle...no more headaches after 3 sessions! She noticed a great difference after just one treatment. Turns out, she had a misalignment in her upper spine due to cheerleading and tumbling. May be worth a try!

Dr Claire Yanta at the University of Pitt, Dept of Neurology, Headache Center. My daughter is 18 and has suffered with headaches and migraines for years. We just recently started seeing Dr. Yanta, and we really like her. My daughter is also on a vitamin regimen and has also used peppermint oil in the past as well as chiropractic treatments. She also takes presc meds recommended by the Dr. Good luck. It's awful seeing them suffer.
Dr Robert Kaniecki in Oakland. That is who I go to for migraines. Call now because it will take a while to get in to him as he is the guru of migraines in Pgh. 412-647-9494.

He is very honest and will let you know up front after an evaluation if he thinks he can help.

Go to Dr. Kaneicki at the UPMC headache clinic in Oakland....he is in charge of the clinic, he is the best headache doctor you can possibly hope for! I have been a patient for three or four years, just took my 16 year old daughter for her first appointment. We both get migraines.... he has reduced us both by at least half. In addition to appropriate preventative medication ( not heavy pain meds) he encourages a lifestyle that includes exercise, proper rest, avoidance of caffeine in high amounts, drinking plenty of water, and taking magnesium. His whole philosophy is based on maintaining the body's levels of serotonin.... which is where a migraine comes from when it drops. I would call for an appointment now because the wait is about 6 months, but it is worth it!!!! In the meantime, ask her doctor to try her on the lowest dose of topamax and start doing some of the things I mentioned... hopefully it will give her some relief! Good luck!!!!!

We pretty much go to Pittsburgh Hospitals for everything now! All my problems started with a gallstone getting into my bowel duct & destroying part of my pancreas! I thank God every morning that I am still here! The drs at Westmoreland suggested I go to the city bc they did not feel comfortable doing the surgeries & I had 8 of them!

I take my son who has CP and seizures to Dr Sauter. He is very serious. But listens. His staff and PA are excellent. I have a friend whose young daughter saw him after seeing every specialist and neurologist at Children's Hospital for 10 years. She had issues walking, with speech and he saw her and immediately gave her a cerebral palsy diagnosis at 10 years old! He said it was obvious. She was finally able to get the help she should have had since birth. They do EEGs in the office within a day or 2. And they always call back the same day if you have a problem.

Omg Rachel the same thing happened to me with the gallstone got stuck in my bowl duct! The difference is I didn't have a problem with my pancreatis I got sepsis blood infection! I was at Westmoreland hospital too! They life flighted me to Alleg hospital cause they put a stent in my liver and I couldn't breath! They ended putting me on a breathing machine! I was on oxygen 4 a year got off of it during the day still using it at bedtime had phenomnia in my right lung! Lung was collapsed lung Dr didn't think my lung would come back but it did thank god I only had 90% of my lung working! If I stayed at Westmoreland hospital too I would not be here either! Does anyone know of any neurologists (other than Children's Hospital) that accepts children? My daughter is 11. She's been on medication for migraines since she was 9....
Mikehla D. replied:
I saw Dr. Kay at UPMC Monroeville (Oxford Dr behind the mall) whi has been nothing but helpful. If you've been with UPMC for all of this STICK WITH UPMC. I had to switch to Excela and it is a PAIN. I'm assuming it would be difficult going from Excela to UPMC as well. I suffer from migraines as well, and I've been on Maxalt, Naproxen, Amitriptyline, etc. and nothing has helped. Various CTs and MRIs as well. For an MRI, if you are able to go to UPMC, go to UPMC Wexford, because they have the ability to put a movie on and block out some of the sound, and MRIs are super loud.

Dr Robert Kaniecki at the Headache center in Oakland. I go there, but don't know policy with children and it will take a couple months to get in there as well. At least make the appointment so you have it. Take her to the ER if necessary at Children's.

Not bad mouthing doctors. Facts are being stated. My son who has seizures was on depakote.. His ammonia levels were high from the drug. Never tested his ammonia levels until I requested it. My son was sick as a dog for over a year. Dr. Sauter was his doctor. He is doing great at the present time. Better than ever. Dr mazaweiki (spelling) at westmoreland neurology changed his meds.
Can anyone recommend a good neurologist with evening hours for help with my constant headaches?

Amanda G. replied:
Dr Bill Shine in Greensburg. He's a chiropractor who specializes in this kind of stuff
Ellen J. replied:
I highly suggest a chiropractor as well. I had residual headaches/migraines for a long time after having two brain surgeries to correct the original problem. I was on drugs from the neurologist which did nothing but make me tired all the time. It wasn't until about 6 months ago, I finally got some relief when I went to a chiropractor who took his time with me and figured out I have many nerve issues. Unfortunately, it takes much time and patience to resolve, but over about 5 months, I've had amazing success. I went from 10 headaches a week to 1-2 on a bad week. I see Dr. Chas at All Kare Chiropractic in North Huntingdon, but depending on where you are, I've heard great things about Dr. Senuta in Latrobe area as well.

About a year ago I eliminated Gluten from my diet and my headaches have reduced tremendously....wish I would have done it sooner. Aldi and WalMart have great selections of gluten free items if you decide to try it. Good luck!
