Messiah United Methodist in Springfield is taking jewelry right now for the upcoming event scheduled for October. They price jewelry that's donated early and put all the money earned toward missions. Choctaw Nation outreach in Mississippi, downtown DC Urban Plunge, a soccer league is forming for an apartment complex full of children who can't afford to play any other way. Reggie Tuck is the new preacher and he's turning that church toward the local community and it's having a direct impact.

Antique/thrift/consignment store recommendations I'm designing props for a show and am in search of (ideally fairly cheap) items from the late 1940s and early-mid 1950s....

The unique thrift store/value village just outside the beltway on New Hampshire Ave is freaking gigantic. Like the size of two supermarkets. I'm sure you'd find something there.

Popville has hosted some discussions about this: http://www.popville.com/2015/06/from-the-forum-cute-inexpensive-furniture-options/ and http://www.popville.com/2012/02/dear-popville-where-to-find-truly-affordable-furniture/ are the first two that caught my eye. As a regular CL free watcher, I can report that I often has the stuff you mentioned (thought it is time consuming to watch, get, etc.) I also see that Habitat for Humanity Restore in MoCo regularly gives furniture away. I agree that VV is a good place to look, as well.

These are the places our theatre uses: Community Forklift, in Hyattsville: http://communityforklift.org/our-store/our-inventory/ Second Chance near Baltimore http://www.secondchanceinc.org/ We've also used Anything But Costumes in NJ if we're looking for something specific. A little bit out of your way, but they really do have EVERYTHING! Good luck!

You can also try Mom N' Pop Antiques on Georgia Ave or Ruff n Ready Furnishings on 14 th. Both a bit pricier than Value Village or Georgia Ave. Thrift but more likely to have items from that period.
IndigoAlpha replied:
[Meeps DC](http://www.meepsdc.com/) may fit the bill. It's not *that* cheap and their items may be a little after the 40's and 50's but definitely worth taking a look because they definitely have a lot of very cool vintage clothing items stretching through a number of decades.

Can’t recommend Afram Jewelers on H between 14 th and 15 th enough. They’re a family owned business, and will treat you with the utmost respect. Their prices are extremely reasonable too. I’ve used them for watch battery replacement, as well as more extensive repairs to my watch face. If they’re not busy, they can change your battery in 5 minutes while you wait!

Ok, so I remember Marino Jewelers on Main St. and Sude Jewelers on Main St. But where on Main was Saray Jewelrs located??? Anyone know?
Gary Z. replied:
If your going from the train station toward the town dock ... On the right side of the road was Lennon's Pub, Carlo's Pizza then a parking lot entrance, then Sarry Jewlers. On the opposite side of the road was Dime Bank, a parking lot, a fur coat store, then the beacon theater. Correct me if I'm wrong .... Not 100% sure
Gail Z. replied:
I think the one with the son's name Paul was Pierre Jewelers on Main st just west of Carlos pizza. BUT I think Saray Jewelers was in the same block??? Saray was not next to Marino;s as I recall???? As I remember the name was Saraydarian. The son went to school with my son Gary and I worked with his mother Christine!
Michelle A. replied:
Hi Gail Zirpolo! You are right! Saray Jewelry was next door to Pierre and diagonally across from the movie theater. My mother Christine remembers you, unfortunately my father Sahak Saraydarian passed away July 2010.
I use Robert Laurence Jewelers. 1200 block of G Street NW...across the street from Macys. Ask for Margaret. She won't remember me but she foes most of their work.
