It is perhaps a wild guess, but if you are a UT student, they offer counseling and psychiatric services for very, very cheap. cmhc.utexas.edu Even if you are not a student, they offer referral services. You come in, talk with a counselor for 10-15 minutes and they will give you a referral based on your needs and your insurance. Hope this helps! Source: I work in the CMHC at UT.

Hey, it kind of depends on what kind of anxiety you have, but it turns out UT has a world-class anxiety study program. They treat all types of anxieties, anything from standard phobias to social anxiety to public speaking/performance anxiety. I went through it, and found it both fascinating and in the end very helpful. It's a bit strange working on something like anxiety in a study setting, but I got a lot out of it. If the anxiety program isn't for you, but you don't think you need or want someone who will recommend medication, you can get affordable counseling at Central Austin Counseling.

Good luck finding one. I helped someone try to find one a few years ago and we couldn't find any taking new appointments. If you're insured, there will be a list of psych's on their website that are in network, and you just have to go down the list. There are some yelp-like websites for doctors, might want to check those out also. If you find a good resource for finding a psychiatrist please reply, I'd be interested to know.

I don't get all the anti-meds crap in this thread. Therapy works for people who aren't mentally ill, if that's what you're looking for, see a psychologist. But I get so fucking tired of people shitting on me for treating a medical condition with prescription medication. If you're mentally ill you need a combo of therapy and meds. Therapy alone isn't going to alleviate symptoms of mental illness. Also, look into CBT or DBT, those are more effective than just talk therapy.

Monti Pal is a psychotherapist in northwest Austin. She’s awesome. She’ll work with a psychiatrist with you if that’s what you both decide is best but she’ll spend plenty of time working through problems with you. Very open minded person.

You want a Psychologist. Psychiatrists are more prone to prescribing medication, where Psychologists (who rarely have the ability to write prescriptions themselves) have training in a number of ways to help you with your problems. Also, they'll cost less.

Went here over a decade ago when my best friend was killed - is support group set up by family that lost their daughter. http://christicenter.org/ No counseling there but a very good group to cry, vent & feel thru the pain. Only went a handful of times but made a big impact.

She and Don met Jeff when he went to the Remembrance Service for Christmas with me. He was having a hard time dealing with his dad's loss.

That'll probably be your best bet to get started, but be aware that the demand for therapy and counseling services has skyrocketed since the beginning of the pandemic. I don't know you or your situation, but if you can be more flexible on the in-person part that'll improve your chances with the right now part and vice versa. Try contacting Children at Heart Ministries. They offer tons of free services to women and children in TX, including free in-person therapy. While they are a faith-based organization, they don't beat you over the head with a Bible or anything like that, if that is a concern.
