My neurosurgeon, Dr. Elias Dagnew is in Johns Creek, just around the corner from Emory Johns Creek Hospital (behind Kohls). His practice is spine and brain. In October, he performed brain surgery on me and he was wonderful!!!!!!!!!!! While sitting in his waiting area, I've heard lots of very positive comments from spinal surgery patients. Also, many, many great reports from the hospital's medical staff. His bedside manner is outstanding, which I'm sure would be good for your mother. Good luck!

I was wondering if any of y'all could recommend a vet surgeon for our girl?
Also, if anyone is familiar with a torn ACL that needs a TTA surgery and what the recovery...
Melissa M. replied:
We love Dr Bishop at North Main Animal Hospital. But if you need surgery def go to GVS - Dr Cross is amazing at knee surgery on pups
Mary H. replied:
Dr Filer@Veterinary Referral Surgical Practice in Roswell. Replaced our Bishons two knees. Water tank on a treadmill used for recovery therapy. Bishon was 11 when he had them done and is 14 now and still going strong.
Brooke B. replied:
Our Rottweiler had to have knee surgery for this twice and we took him to Dr Orr:)
Sue K. replied:
There are several types of surgeries for an ACL. There are a few Veterinarians that learned how to do these surgeries before we had specialists. Dr. Bill Avra is not a specialist but is very good at these and he will be honest about whether the technique he uses will work. Otherwise you can go to a specialists that will cost 4-5,000. Rehab is extremely important in these surgeries.
Paige T. replied:
It’s kind of far away but I swear by Dr. Dhiel at Duluth Animal Hospital. She did our dogs and was amazing
Helen D. replied:
Dr FitzSimons, Cumming Vet. Did a dbl ACL on our guy. Great job!!

Lauren P. replied:
UGA vet school in Athens did TPLO on both my labs and offer TTA. I highly recommended them and it cost half all other qualified vets.
Beth H. replied:
Lila Rose Banks, we go to Dr. Ray Haberman Foothills Veterinary Clinic., at 375 Auraria Rd, Dawsonville, GA 30534, it’s about 15 minutes from our neighborhood. He is a wonderful Vet and he graduated from UGA and if he doesn’t do the surgery, he probably has a wonderful referral. We love him and I highly recommend him.
Michael H. replied:
My dog has torn both ACLs (actually in a dog its a CCL). Both times he had the surgery done by Dr. Diehl at Duluth Animal Hospital. She is an orthopedic vet. After both surgeries he went for rehab at the North Georgia Veterinary Clinic on Buford Highway on the way to Mall of Georgia. The vet did a tremendous job both times. The recovery is hard for both the dog and the dog owner. I had to build a ramp to use over my steps for a couple of months. Takes about a year for the recovery process to play out.
Sue J. replied:
Dr. Filer did both of our Cairn Terrier's knees. It was about $2500 per knee, and that was 4 or 5 years ago. He was considered the best at the time.
Sarah D. replied:
Animal Medical Care in Gainesville is amazing. That’s where I take our black lab, Mini.
Michael H. replied:
Dr Diehl at Duluth Animal Hospital charged about $1200 per CCL. With the cost of rehab (which includes work on an underwater treadmill that my dog enjoyed) plus meds, it was a little under $2,000 per procedure. I have seen dogs where the surgery was done poorly; you definitely need to hire a specialist for this kind of operation.
LuAnn F. replied:
Dr. Shannon in Jefferson
Rosemary L. replied:
We had TPLO done locally at Cumming Veterinary. They use a contract surgeon who specializes in that procedure, and he did a good job. Reasonably priced by comparison. Our girl is doing great--she's a medium sizes rare hound breed. No significant rehab required, but we adhered to the the recovery regime pretty closely. That's about a solid 3 months of no to limited activity, which is tough. Leash walks for potty breaks, etc.
Paula H. replied:
Dr. Curcio North Ga veterinarian specialist They are over in Buford Georgia .... I have a 100 lb dog who pulled his ACL when we were our hiking, I went to I local highly recommend veterinarian here in the Cumming area, things went worse from there ... I am not going to name the vet or the office but the operation was Botched and by the time I got Sam to Dr. Curcio every ligament effecting the knee has also torn . It was so bad he suggested amputation, I said no . Let's try and he Dr.Curcio did and saved my dogs leg
Paula H. replied:
He tore his ACL in his good leg a year later and Dr.Curcio fixed it right the first time And he recovered faster Both of Sam's back legs full of plates and screws Our hikes are now shorter but he is back on the trail !

I took my dog for an evaluation with Dr Avra with Forsyth Animal Hospital on Hwy 9. My dog didn’t need surgery, but he said that he does 100+ ACL surgeries a year, but is not board certified to do it. Can’t go so far as to recommend, but he’s worth looking into. Good luck!
Tricia H. replied:
Dr. Oshin, North Georgia Veterinary Specialists in Buford. They are top notch for both surgery and therapy.
Casi K. replied:
My dog just had his ACL repaired by Dr. Sewell at crestview animal hospital. He did an amazing job! We had the surgery done 4 weeks ago and my dog is doing great. He’s almost completely back to normal. His price was also reasonable. The surgery was approximately $2500. Dr. Sewell called several times after the survey just to check on my little psycho.
Katie W. replied:
https://bluepearlvet.com/sandy-springs-ga/our-team/kevin-winkler-dvm-dacvs/ I’ve actually observed him preform several TPLO, TTA surgeries (part of a medical device trial). He’s one of the best!

Rosemary L. replied:
But you should go to UGA Vet School if you're determined that the TTA is the way you want to go. I don't think there's a vet in Cumming who does them. I researched both extensively but decided that TPLO is a tried and proven procedure.
Angela H. replied:
I agree on Dr Avra. My Jack Russell blew out his knee and Dr Avra did his surgery. He did an excellent job. The surgery was back the summer before this last one. The hardest thing was to keep him calm and make him rest and lay down and not take off running. My Jack Russell is 13 and the vet said he is a very healthy dog and he would be around for a while so we bit the bullet and had the surgery. So glad we did.
