Melody asks, “I would like a referral for a pediatric gastroenterologist. Our 3.5 year old is chronically constipated. We have visited his pediatrician, made changes...
Melanie H. replied:
I don't have a good recommendation of a Dr as we saw Dr Kunnath and I wasn't a fan, but I would like to ask if you've tried chiropractic to help? My son had bowel issues (only had a stool every 15 days and screamed the entire time despite them being normal consistency) and chiropractic helped immensely. If you try the chiropractic route I highly recommend https://www.facebook.com/172242912842028The Health Practice - Dr. Andrea Burke as she's dealt with and treated kiddos with issues like this before.
Terra S. replied:
We see Anna Trauernict at Boystown. She is very open to natural things, extended breastfeeding, chiropractic, and therapies (our son also sees a bladder and bowel PT to work on his pelvic floor).
Jennifer P. replied:
We liked Dr. Kunnath at Boystown.

Boys Town!
Amber S. replied:
Dr. Dean Antonson, at UNMC but has his own private practice. Absolutely an amazing man, smart, knowledgeable, GREAT with kids & parents. Used him for both of my kids, he saved each of their lives. Love him. He tries natural first before scopes, prodding etc.
Jennifer O. replied:
Dr Prestridge at Boystown is excellent.
Mirinda C. replied:
I recommend Dr Andyhttps://www.facebook.com/493040857463855 Radiant Life to also help with constipation issues.
Jaime S. replied:
We see Dr Trauernicht at Boystown and she's been great
Adria asks: Can anyone recommend a pediatric gastroenterologist? We want someone who can help us as much as possible with dietary solutions to our son's GI problems.
Omaha P. replied:
I really liked Dr. Kunnath. He was very thorough, easy to understand, and wiling to take things a step at a time before going to extreme measures.
Omaha P. replied:
What's going on? We haven't had much luck w/ the ped GIs here in town. I did better working on my own. Are you bfing? Are you on the Omaha MSPI Support Group? We had the best luck I guess w/ Dr. Zapata at Children's but I'm not even sure he's still around. I did not like Dr. Prestrige at all and did NOT like Dr. Zapata's PA, would not see either of them again. We saw Dr. Antonson too but he's not taking GI clients last I knew. All 4 of mine have had many food intolerances and the best thing I did was do the Dr. Sears Total Elimination Diet. ~Jenn
Tara C. replied:
We liked Dr. Pablo Palomo at Children's.
Sarah C. replied:
My son sees Kristin Madden, one of the Nurse Practitioners at Children's GI. No matter which clinic you choose, request to see a dietitian when you go. I know Children's GI staffs 2 that are just for that clinic. Not sure about BT. Dietitians are a great resource, and most of their suggestions will be less "medical" in nature. They are also super supportive of BFing and knowledgeable about all kinds of special diets.
Christina N. replied:
I am a pediatric dietitian - I just left Children's Mercy in KC (we now live in Kearney, NE). If you need a second opinion and are willing to travel, Dr. Cocjin was my favorite GI doc at CMH in Kansas City. By the way, if you contact me privately, I may be able to answer a couple questions....and as Sarah said (thanks, by the way!:) ) RD's are usually very breastfeeding friendly and often a nice bridge between the medical community and a more natural approach.
Lori B. replied:
Dr. Laurel Prestridge at Boys Town Pediatric Hospital, she is fantastic and one of the best in the US
Kristi P. replied:
I don't like to talk bad about people, but I do NOT like Dr. Zapata. He risked my sons life on more than one occasion by not listening to me or his other specialists. And unfortunately I have heard this same scenario from quiet a few other parents and doctors as well. Last year after my son's surgeon diagnosed him with a large Hiatal Hernia that was pressing on his lungs and a slipped Nissen Funoplication that was the last straw. I went to Zapata first when I knew something was wrong (constant stomach pain, stomach making weird noises, refusal to eat) he blew me off saying, "Everyone's stomach makes noises and toddlers are picky." The only reason why he wasn't losing a ton of weight or seriously dehydrated was because he's tube fed. One call to his surgeon with a list of his symptoms and they had him in ASAP for an Upper GI and then he went in for open surgery to repair it all.:( I highly recommend Dr. Prestridge at Boy's Town National Hospital (all of Tristan's other specialists are at Children's and I love them all) she is very understanding, she listens to her patients concerns, and she is definitely more open minded than other GI doctors. We do a "blended diet" for Tristan threw his feeding tube, where we blend up real food to feed him instead of using commercial formula. That was something Dr. Zapata was very must against even though it made HUGE improvements with my son's quality of life, Dr. P is all for it, though, and very encouraging. She even recently hired a nutritionist that specializes in BD and is very thorough in making sure my son is getting everything that he needs.
Omaha P. replied:
See how varying opinions are, lol. Dr. P refused to treat us anymore when we refused to give our daughter a controversial medication so IMO she's not open minded to what parent's want at all. ~Jenn
Sunny F. replied:
Dr. Antonsen saved my brothers life when he was a baby and helped my niece and nephew tremendously when they were babies with mspi.
Kristi P. replied:
Jenn - Yes, I guess everyone has different experiences and opinions. Dr. Zapata wanted to put my son on a medication the was black boxed by the FDA and told me I didn't know what I was talking about when I refused to put my son on it. A month later at our next appointment he was talking to me about how horrible it was and that it was black boxed by the FDA like he hadn't been trying to get me to put my son on it for months and I wasn't the one who told him about it being black boxed the month before. PS I didn't like Dr. Zapata's PA, either!
Lori B. replied:
We had absolutely no problems with Dr P, as a matter of fact she was very understanding, thorough, listened to our concerns and addressed every one of them. She also came highly recommended from several other doctors in town. I have had no other dealings with any other pediatric GIs before Dr P but am glad we went with her!:)
