Colleen asks, “Any reviews/experiences with Metro OB/GYN? Especially the Council Bluffs branch? I was with Midwife's Place until they closed and am looking for a new...
Anne M. replied:
I used Methodist Physicians obstetricians in CB, but I will just note that Metro OB/GYN is not actually midwives in the same sense that you might expect after an experience at Midwife's Place. They are much more like a stereotypical OB provider that will show up for the actual birth and not necessarily beforehand. I just know some women had different experiences than their expectations based on their use of the word "midwife." It probably varies with the individual provider but hopefully this is something to think about / ask questions about so you know what to expect.
Amanda H. replied:
Methodist Physicians are awesome. Just had a baby last month. My OB (Platt) was on vacation when I went into labor & her two partners teamed up for my delivery. They are very supportive of natural techniques. Also delayed cord clamping & 1 hour skin to skin is their standard policy. That was my 3 rd baby/delivery, first at their clinic, & it was by far the best experience.
Heather S. replied:
I used metro for 3 of my 4 kids. I saw a doc for 2 and a midwife for one. Midwife delivered all 3. I have seen most of the providers in that practice. My youngest is a year this december and i got to control when the pitocin was on and off. I could turn it off to labor in tub. My midwife brought me a sandwich during labor and pretty much catered to my wants. She stayed my whole labors each time. She had the ob on call in house when i had pre-e in case we needed to do an emergency c-section. Never pressured into that. Never needed it. She delivered him with cord wrapped twice around his neck twice. She delivered the first one who got stuck and the last one, who was sunny side up all with no issues. With the midwife i saw throughout my pregnancy (she was my first doc's np and i knew her well by then) was the same as the docs. Metro does ultrasounds every visit on every client. I liked it, so didnt object, therefore not sure how they would be if someone did object. She managed my pre-e by extensive monitoring and didnt induce until 39 weeks. I was on bedrest with 2-3 visits a week to make sure we were ok. Plan early am visits. In amd out at that point. I have waited 3 hrs for docs, never for the midwives. Metro is really pushing fir jennie only deliveries and mercy has a new doc. Dr. Shanahan. She ran the ob residency program at bergan and is really nice.
Andrea O. replied:
Casie dorr, at Alegent health women's at mercy in cb. Her n dr shanahan are both amazing. Casie is a midwife n amazing. She delivered my last two. Here's the number. And there's no wait in their office n everyone is amazing!!! 7123882860 don't go to metro, I've been going there 17 years!!! They delivered all of mine except last two. They are horrible anymore. Wait is ridiculous as well as service. Had one of nurses doing my blood draw for prenatal tests and she turned her head to grab other vials n turned needle in arm at same time, my arm hurt so bad for a week and bruised. Horrible. That's just one story

I highly recommend researching their cesarean rates. This is a direct indication of how natural/vaginal birth-friendly a provider is. Always ask providers directly but searching by provider name on www.amino.com is a great place to start!

Jana M. replied:
UNMC midwives, birth center in Bellevue, or Finley in Bellevue are the only ones I could recommend. But some of the local midwives have used other ob/gyns with success. Kristen Treat knows a bunch, and is an awesome doula as well. Don't skip on the doula. It's worth the money. I was scheduled with the midwives on my first, but waited to come in, then I had her before the midwife was found and in the meantime, the other people there were giving me crappy advice that I listened to bc I didn't know any better(despite having read books and done Bradley). Second time around I got a doula, and had a great birth despite having some obstacles to overcome.
Brandi K. replied:
Totally get a Doula ( or two!) I liked birthing with Dr Finley at Bellevue medical center. He was amazingly supportive of my choices even coming in as a home birth transfer. I am also a Doula feel free to pm me for more info

I had Jenda and Michele for my birth that lasted over 23 hours. Jenda was very kind and gracious and treated me with respect. Michele didn't leave the entire time even when I ended up with a csection. I will be going to them for my next also at their new practice Guiding Hands Midwifery. I will not see the other 2 midwives left at Methodist I did not have a good experience with them and I thought it really lucky they were not on call when I went into labor.
Tara G. replied:
Michele and Jenda's new practice is Guiding Hands Midwifery. They are both amazing. If I have another I will for sure be checking them out and will not return to the current midwives at Methodist. They were both with me for nearly an entire 18 hours while I was laboring at the hospital with my first and Michele was with me during my second c section. They are wonderful!

Interview a few providers to be sure you find the right fit for you. I recommend interviewing the midwives at UNMC, Dr. Finley at Bellevue Med Center and Heather and her new partner at The Midwife's Place. Don't choose a provider or birth place based on their location, but rather how supportive they will be of your wishes. I also very strongly recommend a doula. No matter how wonderful your husband is or how fantastic your provider is a doula will be an investment you will not regret. As with providers, interview several doulas to find the right fit for you. The Omaha Doulas Association is a good place to start. www.omahadoulas.com

Amber P. replied:
We see Dr. Lisa Whitcomb and love her. She is very open to natural methods and alternate/non-vaxing families and is very knowledgable about breastfeeding. I would recommend a midwife over an OB/GYN if you are looking for a provider open to natural treatments. There are midwives at Methodist Women's Hospital, University of Neb Med Center (The Olson Center) and The Midwife's Place in Bellevue. You could also consider LifeCare Family Medicine in Bellevue. Dr. Finley and Dr. Larsen are both family physicians and also do OB/GYN.
Nicola D. replied:
I would say a Chiropractor and Midwife. My hubby and I have 4 children. He is a chiropractor that works around or with Insurance. Our youngest is 10 months and saw Laura Wilwerding 1 time after delivery after she was born just because. My 3 year old has only seen a Ped 1 time in 2 years just because again. Other than that my husband@Indeed Chiropractic 402-637-6715 sees all of our kids and tons more from other patients! Laura is great with BFing and is open. Heather Ramsey for a midwife. Kent Plummer is certified and a Child Cert.
Julie S. replied:
We see Dr. Wilwerding. She has been great! I also LOVE my OB. Dr. Burke. She actually suggested I see a chiropractor. We do see a chiropractor too. We go to Koca Chiropractic Clinic off 120 th Blondo. Fantastic group of people!!!

Jana M. replied:
We use Dr. Finley for our whole family for all things medical, but mostly we use preventative care: Essentials Chiropractic, Four Winds, Land of Milk and Honey's herb of the month, and what I'm learning in my herb classes. We rarely need to go in to the doctor.

I don't think the UNMC Midwives take women for well women care if they have never had a pgcy with them, but I could be wrong. I see Heather Ramsey at the birth center and LOVE it! I've had an OB before and this is just way better. ~Jenn
Tracy M. replied:
It really depends what you're looking for...personalities differ. Heather Ramsey, CNM is an amazingly skilled and caring provider. Dr. Stancil is awesome. It really depends what you like and where you can go! We are so lucky to have so many amazing doctors in the Omaha area! I did a paper last week and according to recent numbers, we have 142 physicians who perform births in Omaha alone, and 12 nurse-midwives (give or take).
Kristin J. replied:
Love, Love, Love Dr. Andrea Leishman-Barb--she's at Lakeside and UNMC with Omaha OBGYN. Funny enough, I was seeing a partner for my first pregnancy and when he "couldn't make it" to deliver my daughter (even though he induced me that morning and delivers all his own babies), Andrea showed up instead! I absolutely love her...she's see me through well women care since Harper was born and through a recent miscarriage. I can't wait to be pregnant with number two (three really) to go through OB care with her...she's AWESOME! The first doctor I've ever called the office for and actually been able to talk to on the phone without jumping through hoops and three other people!
Racheal N. replied:
Dr Ann Sullivan at lakeside. She's in with dr cote but I found his bedside manner is rather rude. I had a high risk pregnancy and she was wonderful with making sure my needs were met and that things went smoothly and how I planned.

Girl you should try UNMC. Jenn-they do I had a well check last Jan when Heather was still there, then got prego in March and delivered a couple weeks ago! Seriously they are AWSOME. If you're looking for a natural birth I completely recommend Dr. Finley! He's located at Bellevue Med Ctr. Lifecare Family Medicine. He allowed me to VBA2C naturally and I drove from Lincoln. Some women drive to him from KS. He has his own fan club on Facebook if you need testimonials.:-)
Lisa H. replied:
LOVE Dr. Somer-Shely as well. She was completely supportive of my natural birth and Hypnobabies plans.
Sara O. replied:
I see Dr. Paige Berryman at Methodist. She is personable, down to earth and is so charismatic. I actually switched to her midway through my pregnancy because I was so unhappy with my other provider. She was very supportive of my birth plan and talked through everything with me. She never made me feel rushed at my appointments. She has been great with post partum care as well. Her staff is knowlegeable and prompt in returning calls when I have had questions (which is often!) I would highly recommend her. Good luck making a decision! Its great to read the many posts about all the resources in our area.
Samantha J. replied:

Also said they have patients driving from Kansas, south Dakota western/central Iowa and central Nebraska!!

I second Dr. Somer-Shely! I was able to see her with 1 of my 4 pregnancies and she was my best OBGYN and even better than the midwife I had seen (she was based out of CB). She was super friendly and when I was delivering my son she sat in the room with us on the bed and talked to me prior to pushing. ~Emily

Definitely Pope Paul because they are going to get to the ROOT cause of why you have PCOS. Personally, I healed my PCOS with doTERRA's Long Life Vitality supplements, Phytoestrogen Complex, Bone Nutrient Complex, and ClaryCalm blend of essential oils. It took a good year to heal, but I'm so glad I did it.
