Can any one recommend a good pediatrician in wake forest? Will have a baby in February and need to decide on a practice. Thanks!
Anita C. replied:
Capitol Peds in Wakefield. (919) 782-5273. Mentioned a few times here, but EVERYone there is wonderful! They used to have a monthly "open house" to get to know them. Definitely go to decide for yourself! I will tell you that Nurse Kathleen (a lactation specialist!!) made such a difference for me in the first few weeks/months that we ALWAYS schedule with her because we fell in love! http://www.capitolpediatrics.com/

Stephanie S. replied:
Dr. Dirk Hamp at Growing Child
Summer A. replied:
First, you need to decide if you want a smaller practice with a more personal feeling, or a larger staff with more availability and flexibility, but less of a personal touch. We choose larger. We can always be seen if our daughter gets sick or hurt. There are advice nurses and staff on call at all hours. But, we have seen several doctors over the years. We go to Raleigh Pediatric Associates off of Falls of Neuse. We love it. If you want to be able to always see the same doctor, then you will want a smaller practice. But remember they may not be as flexible. Good luck!
Amy M. replied:
Dr Derk Hemp at Growing Child.. We are first time parents and our child has special needs. He is so patient and personable. We go see him at the Zebulon office usually BC it is smaller but he is in WF ofc most days. Awesome doctor!

Sara H. replied:
We've been going to Wake Forest Peds for 10 years with our son. I've liked everyone that we deal with there. You can ask for a particular doctor, but you don't have to. We used to always see a Nurse Practicioner, but then she left. Now, we don't see anyone in particular. They have sick walk-in times as well. They're right behind Taco Bell off of South Main St. in WF. http://www.wakeforestpediatrics.com/welcome.html

We really like Dr. Ercolino from Wake Forest Pediatrics. We see him typically, but also have seen many of the doctors and nurses and they have all been great. After trying a few different peds with our kids (we have 5 girls) we settled in at Jeffers,Mann and artman on Rogers road. They're amazing and knowledgeable, caring, professional, thorough and get to know the whole family. They have a 24/7 nurse line, night and weekend sick hours as well. Dr Erin Regan is our favorite! They go above and beyond any other peds we went to so we have been impressed.
Tara W. replied:
What are you looking for in a pediatrician? What is your lifestyle like? These are things you need to think about so you know what questions to ask. We chose a pediatrician who is supportive of parental autonomy, same gender as my children, and is will ing to consider alternative or complementary treatments. What are the things that are important to your family? Do you intend to vaccinate according to the CDC schedule? Do you want a same gender doctor? Do you want a small practice? We love Dr Ryan at Capitol Pediatrics for our boys. I am a birth doula and would be happy to chat and help you come up with a list of things to ask when interviewing prospective doctors.:) Silly Stork Birth Services

Love love love Oberlin road. I have 4 kids (3 girls in college and a 10 yr old son) all the girls love Dr Tina Stewart ..and are happy to see the other docs on short notice... we are always able to talk to someone when needed, they have a great staff and quick response by phone and evening/weekend hours when needed. Some of the nurses have been there as long as we have ;)
Ceci B. replied:
We absolutely adore Dr. Dirk Hamp of Growing Child Pediatrics. He is caring, he listens to us, he asks questions to the kids, he is loving to our boys, he is professional and calms me down when I am terribly worried without reason and double checks and order extra tests and refers to specialists when he believes something needs more attention. I'll follow him to whatever office he goes. Our first time with him, my boys were 3 yo and 5 yo... now they are 14 and 16... Don't know how I'll do once they don't need a pediatrician any more!
Beth M. replied:

Raleigh peds! They have extended hours at night, and open on weekends for sick visits. They are only closed 4 days.a year and they have an on call Ped that you can reach 24/7. He was calling me to check in multiple times a week and even visited us at the hospital. When my daughter was diagnosed with diabetes he again was very supportive and put us in contact with another local family to help us as we transition. He is awesome and we will not go anywhere else!

Michele M. replied:
Susan West Olvera..I love to read your posts, you always speak from your heart and have done your own research. You are exactly right in that as parents, we must be our children's biggest advocate and supporter. And what may work for one child, may not work for another. Where I work, I have had countless conversations with mother's who have told me their heartbreaking stories of their children reverting back to babies after given a certain vaccine. Then they tell me that their pediatrician told them that "unfortunately those side effects can happen". Hearing their stories definitely made me emotional and it proves to me that detrimental side effects can...and do happen. Doing ones own in depth research on this subject would undoubtedly take a very long time, that is why I never judge another parent for the choices they make for their own child. No one should..Thank you again Susan for another well versed post.....And your awesome Elderberry syrup!!

Susan W. replied:
Hi Michele, We don't use a pediatrician, but our son has seen a wonderful integrative medical doctor since he he was about 14 months old. It's North Raleigh Family Medicine. We initially found what we thought was a pediatrician's office that didn't push vaccines, and we did a delayed schedule, however when he had reactions to his DTap vaccinations they would not document it in his chart. Please let her know to read the FDA information of specific vaccinations prior to vaccinating when she crosses that bridge. I didn't do this and now know the Tripedia DTap vaccination does in fact list Autism and SIDS as potential side effects on the FDA's website. Here's the link, it's on page 11. " Adverse events reported during post-approval use of Tripedia vaccine include idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, SIDS, anaphylactic reaction, cellulitis, autism, convulsion/grand mal convulsion, encephalopathy, hypotonia, neuropathy, somnolence and apnea. Events were included in this list because of the seriousness or frequency of reporting. Because these events are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequencies or to establish a causal relationship to components of Tripedia vaccine. " http://www.fda.gov/downloads/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/UCM101580.pdf
Caitlin N. replied:
No Shots No School is NOT True A more accurate expression would be “No Shots or No Exemption, No School”. Recommendations for vaccine use are issued by the federal government (Centers for Disease Control) but vaccine requirements and exemptions are a matter of state law and, while they vary from state to state, all 50 states have them. It is important to know your legal rights. Medical Exemptions: all 50 states Religious Exemptions: 47 states
Susan W. replied:
And if she travels internationally, the World Health Organization has information on a country's vaccination rate and illness incident rate for the diseases the vaccinations prevent. My husband is Latino and before we traveled to Mexico we checked this and learned Mexico has the same vaccination schedule as our country and a higher vaccination rate.
Jennifer P. replied:
I love Stepping Stones Pediatrics too. I was referred there because I was looking for a doctor that did not push medicine all the time and was open to alternative methods of treating things. I like all the docs but we see Dr Burke-Haynes the most because of the above reason.
Michele M. replied:
Jennifer...I just read that Dr. Haynes is no longer there... She is still the owner of the practice though ..
Rhea G. replied:
I hope this new mom knows that children are required to have certain vaccinations to attend school. Also, if she is worried about the "vaccinations cause autism" debacle. It was shown that the research that indicated this was totally false. http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/01/05/autism.vaccines/index.html

Kerry C. replied:
We've seen Jeffers, Mann & Artman since our kids were born (before knowing our oldest had ADHD) and have been happy with them. We took him to specialists for the diagnosis, but Jeffers Mann has treated him since then with meds and adjusting them as necessary. They have done a good job of helping us manage the medication...HOWEVER, they also recognize their limitations for anything beyond managing the average case. We now see a Psychiatrist for medication management, but still go to Jeffers Mann for everything else. I was excited and hopeful when I saw this past year that Growing Child pediatrics offered something called the Fast Brain program (camps and parent classes), which is specifically for ADD/ADHD. I talked to my regular pediatrician about it and she felt they wouldn't do much different in the medication management area, but personally I love the idea of the camps and classes. For us, managing our son's ADHD is probably 80% managing our own patience and parenting style, so any training we can get is helpful. We didn't end up sending him to the Fast Brain camp...I think because it would have required some prescreening, interviews, appts, etc and we already take him to so many places that I was exhausted thinking about more appointments, etc. plus, we already take him to a Child Psychologist (in addition to the Psychiatrist who only manages the meds), who is phenomenal. So that is my two cents on it locally (we've lived here for almost 13 years). If you decide you want to try the therapist, message me and I can give you the info...he has been just fantastic for us! He actually gives us practical steps for handling specific situations or behavior. Bad thing is, specialists are usually out of network with our BCBS insurance.

Posted this on an earlier similar thread, but reposting here: We've been going to Dr. Milton Sevilla (Wakefield Pediatrics) for 14+ years. Great, small practice. So small, I'm not even sure they have a website, lol. Located near Galaxy Fun Park/ Harris Teeter area. They know us immediately whether I call on the phone or go into the office. Dr. Sevilla is kind, patient and has always taken excellent care of us. I chose him as our pediatrician back when I was pregnant with our 1 st child. I worked as a bank teller and unlike many doctors that I dealt with, he never had an entitled attitude but was always very easy to deal with. That meant a lot to me.

I'm very very highly recommend dr. Patel kamini at North Wake Pediatrics she is in the Physicians Pavilion at North WakeMed I have three children my oldest daughter is 9 we have been using dr. Patel since she was 6 months old and before we went through four or five pediatricians she had a lot of health problems as a baby and was at the doctor's office almost every week since the day I started using dr. Patel I have never even contemplated letting anybody else touch my child she is the only person my children see she pierce my daughter's ears even did both my sons circumcisions if there is a problem after hours I can call the after hours number and rest assured knowing that every time I will talk to dr. Patel not a nurse or a stranger she is never needed my children's charts to know who they were or what was going on with them or their history she is always been extremely patient and gentle with my children and never pushes medicine she strongly believes that a parents natural instinct always tells them what thier child needs! She does not practice by the book she knows that we have all evolved not only in society but in life children have evolved as well illnesses aren't what they used be most treatments that once were perfect no longer work at all .. we are all changing daily and because of that she practices from what she sees daily and learns through constant work! She will always work out alternative plans to anything your un comfortable w.. my middle son was a week old on formula and looking weight he slept really good and often wouldn't wake every 4 hrs for a feeding and I always believed you don't wake a sleeping baby they will eat when they are ready but what I didn't know was that the reason he wasn't waking is because he wasn't getting enough calories to have enough energy to wake up every 4 hours and get through a hole feed which is why he was looking weight... they needed to hospitalised him and monitor him to make sure nothing else was going on and that they could get him on track I was devastated the doctors at wake med immediately wanted to put a feeding tube in and I was so upset and scared no matter what I said they were insistent they needed to do that..so i asked Dr Patel to come and give me a second opinion and help me out ..which of course she did she signed off releasing me from having to do the feeding tube and worked out a 72 hour plan w me .. i was going to start pumping and try to get him to eat breast milk.. i couldn't just try to breast feed as he was almost 10 days old and I had wrapped my boobs up trying to dry my milk out and we was weak so trying to pull enough milk would of been to hard for him and the hope was because breast milk is lighter and easier digested which means they get more nutrition from less of it than formula so the hope was he would drink more and digest more increasing his calorie intake and in turn giving him enough energy to wake up next feed ... i was struggling even pumping she called in a breast feeding specialist helped me w a diet and prescribed medicine to boost my milk and it WORKED!! After 10 days he was gaining weight my milk was in and he was eating great !! And we got to go home w out anything invasive ever being done!! She was an angle for both my older children my daughter went from being at the doctor weekly to once a year!! She is a blessing I can't say enough about her her number Is 919-848-2167

I agree, Raleigh Pediatrics. To your point, I have experienced similar difficulties since moving here finding an office w/ a doctor I like AND a competent front desk/ back office staff. When my son was born he wasn't gaining weight properly and he was by our side checking in with us all along the way (it went on for over a month at 2 different hospitals). He has also came out to support our fundraisers for our JDRF One Walk team. I wouldn't recommend anyone else. Pediatric Ophthalmologist --- Dr. Jeffery Board at Raleigh Eye Center. Not in WF - BUT worth the drive (Near Duke in Raleigh, off of Falls of Neuse) We've been seeing him yearly for the past 7 years for our son who has strabismus. He will eventually need surgery to correct this, but Dr. Board wants to wait until it is necessary to do it (when his brain can no longer tell his eye to go back in place) and that's what we admire and respect the most - he's not in a rush to cut. We've been more eager to get it done, but we trust and follow his plan. When my son was 12 months old, we went to another dr and it was the most horrible experience, for him as well for me and my husband. Holding him down, putting all kinds of strange equipment up to his face - struggling, crying (me too) - just miserable, and we weren't even able to get the answers we needed after the 45 min torture session. We went to see Dr. Board - all my son had to do was sit in a chair and look at a motorized cow and then the dr. held up a single lens to his eye - less than 10 min later, we had answers. http://www.raleigheyecenter.com/dr-jeffrey-board.aspx
